Allergies

This week has been horrible for pollen! (I shouldn't complain because the weather has been beautiful, but I will anyway) We can finally keep all the windows open only to find a dusting of yellow fuzz all over my house!

My kids have been coughing with that tickly, drive you nuts kind of cough. They take allegra twice a day but I'm thinking maybe we should switch to something else for a while. They also take flonase, saline sprays and sudafed.

What do you guys do that works for you?

flonase doesnt work for me, nasacort is the best

I find zyrtec much more effective than all the others

I will beat Amy to the upcoming comment she will post and tell you there is some good info on her blog describing the difference among the meds

I also use Neil Med sinus rinse and love it for when I am congested or having post nasal drip

1. Allergy testing. Many people have house-hold allergies in addition to outdoor allergies. Controlling indoor allergies can grately dimish symtpoms of outdoor allergies. BUt first, you need to get skin tested (by an allergist, not a GP) - IgE blood levels are useless so don't go down that route.

2. Most of us have dust mite fece allergies. I have dust mite encasings on my pillows and matress (purchased at www.allergyasthmatech.com)

3. I have no carpet in my place, but when I did in college I put dust mite powder on my carpet (simple to use - just put it on the carpet and then vacuum it up a few hours later. it lasts 6 months). also can be found at www.allergyasthmatech.com

4. HEPA air purifier in the room that I do meds and my bedroom. Nothing else but HEPA will do. I bought mine at www.costco.com

5. I never open windows in my house. It's a pain, but it lets allergens in. Instead, I run my air conditioner

6. I take an anti-histamine. 70% of the allergic cascade is attributed to histamines. As Nicole said, check out my blog for an explanation of the differences between anti-histamines (school down to categories on the left, then click medications)

7. I take a leukotriene agonist. 30% of the allergic cascade is attributed to leukotrienes. Singulair is my med of choice there

8. I take an intranasal steroid. Flonase has alcohol in it (spraying alcohol up my nose hurts, burns, smells badly and causes nose bleeds). I use Nasacort AQ instead. It's just as powerful, but no alcohol.

9. Allergy shots.

Treating allergies when you have CF can dramatically improve lung function. Allergies cause inflammation in the lungs - and as you know, as CFers, we already deal with so much inflammation to begin with. So heading allergies off at the pass is essential to good health.

Good luck.

forgot to mention I am juist starting allergy shots and I hope they have the effect I am anticipating. I woudl highly recommend getting tested and consider the shots.

jane,

sounds like they are taking the right kinds of things. i take singulair in addition to my allegra and flonase. in the past, when there is a particularly bad allergy season for me, i have had success with switching to zyrtec or something else temporarily.

be careful with zyrtec (this is in my blog but I know not everyone goes there):

it has anti-cholinergic properties. this is a big no-no for CFers. Benedryl as well.

Amy had a lot of good ideas. One of my kids has many allergies and some stuff that has really helped:

-we replaced the carpet in the bedroom w/wood floor
-limit dustmite attracting things in the bedroom-no curtains, stuffed animals, doodads. Every pillow in the bedroom has a dustmite cover (as well as mattresses)
-wash bedsheets every week in hot water

-when there's a lot of pollen I let our dog out a bit less. Animals bring the pollen inside. And if my son is playing outside a lot he'll shower when he comes in.

This really has reduced the amount of meds he needs.
