Altera (Cayston) for Albuterol, HTS and Pulmozyme?

Currently I have a Trio Eflow through Foundation Care for Colistin that I also use for administering Duoneb(Albuterol), HTS and Pulmozyme.

I'm in the process of acquiring Cayston and the Altera through CF Services Pharmacy.

Has anyone used the Altera for these other meds? Or do you have an educated reason why or why not this is a good/bad idea? Should I try to keep the Trio and use this for the other meds...what will that involve since it is technically rented to me for use with Colistin. Perhaps I'll need to fill my Colistin rx even though I won't be using it?!

I was just told yesturday by Foundation Care that with Cayston they will supply the Altera which has the same technology as the pari e flow aka the trio but you CAN NOT use the Altera with other drugs, just the cayston.

Good Luck!

I was basically told the same thing as Jennifer -- for some reason they're really sticking to the story that the Altera is ONLY for the Cayston. Something about particle size? I'm completely baffled by this considering I've had both (originally called the e-flow and e-flow SCF) for a long time now and have always used them interchangeably while of course only using the proper heads with each med. I asked several people if this was okay and always got a "sure, why not?" response. Now they tell me otherwise. I know my cayston hasn't been "ineffective" through the trio, but I guess from now on I will ONLY use it through my altera. Live and learn.

While I only use the drugs for abx (trio for TOBI and altera for cayston), I say if you have both you might as well follow their protocol re: other meds. Sucks for people who only have an altera though.

Oh, just read the second part of your post about the renting. That's really interesting, actually, b/c while I use my Trio for TOBI, lately my IV schedule has been such that I haven't been very regular about refilling my inhaled TOBI script (I am always on IV tobra and never use both at the same time). I've even had times when I was on cayston, then started IVs (tobra and aztreonam) so stopped all inhaled abx, was on IVs for a month, then was told to start back on cayston at the end of IVs for a full 28 days -- making it nearly 3 months before I refilled my TOBI. Foundation Care will occasionally call to see if I'm okay and need refills, and I'll say not yet, and they never mention anything about needing to refill or else send back my Trio. So I'm not sure what their policy is, but I know you don't need to be ordering every 28 days for them to allow you to keep your Trio. It may just be that you need to have a standing prescription and they bill your insurance for the Trio rental every month regardless of whether you actually fill the script? I honestly have no idea.

To my knowledge there isn't yet a way to get the Trio in the US unless you're using it with either TOBI or colistin. Amy (NoE/saveferris) would probably know if there is, though. Have you PMed her?

(speaking of PMs, I got it -- and i promise I'm going to answer, but things have been insane lately! Hope greece/turkey was AMAZING!!)
