Alternate Nutritional Drinks and Sugars

I know I should be posting on the nutrition section, but if you are like me, I only have time to look at one forum, so I hope to get some parents input.
We just started Ethan on Nutren Jr, which he seems to be doing good on. My concern, is the sugar content. I would like to find something low glycemic with the fear of CFers developing diabetes and having bad teeth. I have found adult low glycemic meal replacement shakes, but I don't know if it is safe to give my 3 year old as they are made for adults.
Also, wondering if you use any alternate sugars. I know someone gave some negative feedback on Fructose a while back. What about xylitol, stevia.........

Thanks,
Missa

We haven't used any nutritional drinks but I do make my kids drinks on occasion. I use Kefir which is a cultured milk drink and add frozen berries and almond meal for a little extra fat. Agave Nectar is a great sweetener that I add sometimes.

Can he have dairy? DS gets whole milk with a healthy splash of cream. DS recently started drinking kefir -- lifeways packaged individual containers for children that have little pictures of monsters on the outside. Think they're flavored with fruit juice.

Are you looking for something on the go or just trying to add calories? IF you are at home, blended coconut milk with agave nectar, frozen banana (don't have to add this just give nice thickness) and cocoa powder with ground almonds for extra protein is high calorie, high fat and low in sugar. Agave is great, low glycemic like someone else said and it tastes great. We do smoothies but I know those aren't packable for lunches and such.

Greek yogurt is really high in fat and calories and makes a good blended drink as well with fruits.

The other thing to watch for in the OTC drinks is the hydrogenated fats. These are not healthy and have been linked to increased inflammation. Maybe someday someone will come up with a healthy fat and higher calorie drink for CF people with low glycemic index.

Take care,
