alternative to Gatorade?

My kids drink a ton of Gatorade. Since the whole fungus issue, we've been trying to cut down on sugar in their diet. Josh is completely on board and is drinking lemon water, sometimes plain ice tea. Jesse is very reluctant to give up his beloved Gatorade.

Does anyone know of an alternative? They don't love the vitamin waters or G2 version of Gatorade.

Thanks

One of the parents buys an electrolye-replacement powder she adds to water for her son(s)... she buys it in a big canister and it's available from amazon.com and other places.

we like nuun tablets. They have no sugar. My kids both like the berry and citrus flavors. They are in a small tube so very portable.

Hi Jane,

I don't have a substitute for gatorade but I do know it is VERY bad for your teeth, 7x worse that coca cola. So maybe you can use that angle to persuade him to change to another drink. My father in law is a dentist, his web site where he explains the effects of sports drinks on your teeth is www.drmorleydentist.com. On the left side is the tab that says sports drinks, click that and he explains how they effect your teeth. Good luck!

Interesting about the teeth (and gross). I've always used the lower sugar version of gatorade and added salt (doctor's recommendation). I'm not sure that vitamin water actually has less sugar anyway, does it -- unless of course you're buying the low-sugar vitamin water?

Okay, this isn't so much a solution as a possible bridge to something better or even just a "lesser of 2 evils" thing, but how about diluting the gatorade half and half with water. I do that sometimes with vitamin waters or other artificial tasting drinks when there aren't alternatives, or sometimes even with sugary juices. I normally do about a third of the cup juice and then put in ice cold water, but you could always start with half and half. He won't like it as much as regular gatorade, I'm sure, but he probably won't DISLIKE it either, and it's a way for him to make a compromise that is at least a step in the right direction toward a less sugary diet.

Otherwise, maybe pick you battles first in other areas. Does he have another sugary sweet or food that he he eats often and could wean down on. My nutritionist always says to cut empty sugars first, obviously.
