Always second guessing when to call

Eventually you will know. Here are some things that I ask myself before calling the clinic.

Did it start with a cough or other symptoms such as a runny nose?
*if it started with a cough I call.

How long did he/she have the cough?
*a week or more and I will call.

Is the cough getting worse, i.e. more mucus, wheezing, or tightness in chest?
*if I answer yes to any or all I call.

Did he/she loose any weight or has she shown any sign of a decrease in appetite?
*if I answer yes then I call the clinic.

I learned this lesson the hard way. When my dd (2 y/o) first culutre PA at the age of 15 months she only coughed 3 times a day and it was not even a junky cough!

On top of that I work long hours so I cannot really count her coughs during the day.

so basically I do following: if she coughs at night, then I call , especially if it is not cold related. The doctors told me that coughing at night is a big red flag.

Another thing I do is look for persistency. If she coughs one time and then nothing during the week end when I can watch her, I don't call, but if she gives even one deep cough on Saturday and Sunday, then I do sputum culture (we are lucky to be able to do it as often as needed) b/c it might be a new bug.
