Can someone please enlighten me. What is an exacerbation, exactly?</end quote></div>

An exacerbation is basically when the CF stuff flares up -- usually its when the bugs in the lungs are causing symptoms or the numbers of the bugs grow larger. Its not easily defined. But its the terminology for when the CFer needs antibiotics.

This is the hardest part, sometimes, isn't it?

I tend to use coughing at night as one of my indicators, too, and anytime the daycare staff reports that she coughed through nap or while playing outside. THey're great about keeping track of stuff!

For us, the issues lately have been pirmarily sinus drainage leading to cough, so it's change in position (sitting to laying down or vice versa) resulting in cough that we have to really listen for.

I know it's hard to make the call about abx or no abx. Sometimes, when it's been a tough run, we'll do 10 days of a higher dose/different abx than 20 days of bactrim or whatever. I'm not sure it makes a difference, but I feel better about not having her on the stuff so long.

Good luck!
