Am I being paranoid?

So Wyatt had immunizations on thursday of last week (Hib, DTap, Pneumoccal(sp?), and something else). Saturday night, he has a slight fever, he's spitting up more than normal, and his eye becomes all swollen and inflamed, starts tearing and leaking this white stuff. I call the doctor, and they see him on sunday. The doctor says its just a cold in his eye and will go away, but gives us gentomycin to use twice a day for a week. We've been using it ever since with absolutely no improvement...in fact, in might even be a little worse. I really didn't think this could be a CF thing, except that the Hib vaccine stands for H. influenzae type b and I've seen that H. flu sometimes shows up in CF cultures...is this the same stuff? The vaccine sheet did say in very rare cases in can cause the disease, but can we really be that unlucky? I called the CF doc just to give them a heads up and they said if it got worse to call the pediatrician again, so I did that today but they can't see him again til friday.

H. flu is one of those things that everyone cultures, not just CFers. Its rarely treated and rarely gives CFers an issue. Our Cf doc said that if you cultured all kids, instead of just the CF ones, you'd probably find h. flu in the vast majority of them.

To cause a real flu, its Influenza type A that you'd be concerned about.

The thing I'm thinking is that because he has Cf, the mucous membrane in his eyes may be thicker and allowed the cold to fester. Hang in there. Keep in touch with your doctor and call the CF clinic if you are worried, but this sounds pretty normal to me.

Ok, so we used the gentomycin for a week and Wyatt's eye just got worse. We took him back yesterday (friday) and they gave him erythromycin ointment. Today he started running a fever. When he was at the doctor, she checked his ears and on the right side, the one with the swollen eye, he was sensitive. She said his ear looked a little red but she couldn't tell if it was because of the eye or something else. Could an ear infection be causing his eye to ooze? He cultured staph at his last CF appt, but the doctor said that that was normal and they don't treat for it. Could this all be tied together or not even CF related at all? I appreciate any help, I don't even know if this is CF related and I'm hesitant to call our CF clinic if it isn't. Has this happened to anyone else?

As far as cold/flu season goes... you were originally there on a Thursday and he got sick on Saturday night. My first thought is he picked up a nasty bug at the pediatrician's... they certainly don't keep their exam rooms as clean as our cf centers do and who knows what was floating around in the waiting room!

Congestion can make eyes junky as well as go to the ears. Tear ducts drain to the nose (that's why crying makes our nose run), the ears and nasal passages are all connected and still very immature in a young infant. I don't know that it's 'cf related' per se, but since he's been sick for going on a week now, running a fever... if he has any hint of any resp symptoms at all, I'd check in with his clinic. It might be good just to see if the staph was playing a role; did they culture any of the eye goo? Esp since Wyatt is so little, I'm sure they'd rather hear from you if you have any concerns!

I'm sorry he's so sick and hope he's feeling better soon.

Thank you Harriett!! You'd think since he's my second, I'd be used to this by now.

They did not culture the eye gunk when we were there. But they're just the pediatrician, and the military pediatrician at that (AND we're assigned to the base so we are seen at the clinic...so yes, it's quite possible he picked something there). The last time I called the clinic the doctor seemed too busy to hear any of my concerns and had the PT lady call me back to "see what my problem was." Again, a military facility...so I'm hesitant to bother them, (even though I rarely call them for anything)unless I'm completely sure. I'd rather not subject him to the waiting room at the pediatrician again, but I think I might not have a choice if the fever continues.

Thank you for your help, I was just hoping that this might have happened to someone else so I could have an idea of what was going on with him. He doesn't seem too miserable about it...at least not as long as I'm holding him.
