So Wyatt had immunizations on thursday of last week (Hib, DTap, Pneumoccal(sp?), and something else). Saturday night, he has a slight fever, he's spitting up more than normal, and his eye becomes all swollen and inflamed, starts tearing and leaking this white stuff. I call the doctor, and they see him on sunday. The doctor says its just a cold in his eye and will go away, but gives us gentomycin to use twice a day for a week. We've been using it ever since with absolutely no improvement...in fact, in might even be a little worse. I really didn't think this could be a CF thing, except that the Hib vaccine stands for H. influenzae type b and I've seen that H. flu sometimes shows up in CF cultures...is this the same stuff? The vaccine sheet did say in very rare cases in can cause the disease, but can we really be that unlucky? I called the CF doc just to give them a heads up and they said if it got worse to call the pediatrician again, so I did that today but they can't see him again til friday.

H. flu is one of those things that everyone cultures, not just CFers. Its rarely treated and rarely gives CFers an issue. Our Cf doc said that if you cultured all kids, instead of just the CF ones, you'd probably find h. flu in the vast majority of them.
To cause a real flu, its Influenza type A that you'd be concerned about.
The thing I'm thinking is that because he has Cf, the mucous membrane in his eyes may be thicker and allowed the cold to fester. Hang in there. Keep in touch with your doctor and call the CF clinic if you are worried, but this sounds pretty normal to me.

As far as cold/flu season goes... you were originally there on a Thursday and he got sick on Saturday night. My first thought is he picked up a nasty bug at the pediatrician's... they certainly don't keep their exam rooms as clean as our cf centers do and who knows what was floating around in the waiting room!

But they're just the pediatrician, and the military pediatrician at that (AND we're assigned to the base so we are seen at the clinic...so yes, it's quite possible he picked something there). The last time I called the clinic the doctor seemed too busy to hear any of my concerns and had the PT lady call me back to "see what my problem was." Again, a military facility...so I'm hesitant to bother them, (even though I rarely call them for anything)unless I'm completely sure. I'd rather not subject him to the waiting room at the pediatrician again, but I think I might not have a choice if the fever continues.
