As soon as I stopped high school sports and started driving everywhere instead of walking is when I saw a massive decrease in FEV1. I kept up with airway clearance but that clearly isn't enough like all of you have been saying. So I just joined a gym and am praying that it's not too late to bring my pft's up. I was at clinic today and my best fev1 was only at 45%. If I can even just get it back up to the 60's I'll be so happy.</end quote><br><br>Mike, <br><br>I think at 19 you have a good chance of bringing your numbers up. I ran into the same problem as you when I left college and took a desk job. I stopped sports and walking everywhere. Keep yourself healthy and active.<br><br>Good luck!<br>

Congrats Jonathan! I have been trying to motivate myself for a long time now to get MOVING - but I'm just having a hard time. I'm at my all-time highest weight and I know exercise would help not only getting that under control, but also help improve my PFTs. If you think a group to help motivate others would be great! How about one on Facebook?

I thought about Facebook, but I'm not a huge fan of that service. I'm on a site called TeamBeachbody, but like anything you have to stick with it. I'm better at just getting out and doing things, rather than logging in and scheduling workouts. I'll do some searching and see if I can find a more specific site. If not, I'll consider making my own, although I am just learning HTML 5, so it might take me awhile.

Thanks for starting this thread, Jonathan!
I was at my PFT peak when I was exercising regularly and living in dry climate. Moving back to humid (and quitting exercise) has been devastating so I'm moving to Madrid again at the end of the month. This week I purchased a year contract at the nearby gym in Madrid (I've done some work with the ellyptic machine here on the island and I love it) so my plan is to exercise 30 min daily. I hope to be able to keep the routine, I have the feeling that the combination of dry climate, exercise, and of course medication, will be very fruitful. (I must say I'm NOT a big fan of any form of airway clearance exercises or devices).
If you do start a group, please let me know, I'm in!

That is so awesome Havoc!! And yes, exercise IS key to maintaining an improving your lung function. I have been pretty sick lately and I can tell my PFT's would not be at my best right now, and part of that is because I haven't been as active as I am normally. Again...WTG!!!

Jonathan--Thanks for posting. It is nice to hear that it IS possible to improve lung function. I never saw any big jump in function when I started new drugs (pulmozyme, Tobi, Cayston) but I am hoping to improve function through exercise.
I'm one of those that has known for years that I need to exercise but just couldn't stay motivated. Finally joined a club that clicked for me and now I hate missing a day. Never thought that would happen to me. I'm doing CrossFit type workouts (modified for me) and eating Paleo and I have never felt better. Hoping to see changes in my PFT when I go back to clinic in November.
To those of you struggling....keep searching until you find something you like and can stick with. It is different for everyone.

Thanks for posting this. I have been working out for a long time - it started out because I was an athlete in college and then continued because I liked how it made me feel AND vanity was also a huge part of it. Now I care a bit less about the vanity thing and it's good to get additional motivation to keep up with the workouts. Esp considering I hate chest PT and never do it unless I am sick. My LF has always been high and I used to think it was all because of my genotype, but now I really think a lot of it is exercise.

I also read recently that exercise has been shown to actually decrease nasal potential difference in people with CF:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20525718

So, now, when I workout, I think of it as, "I am making my lungs more like those of a non-CFer for a half hour" <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">
