An Excellent Demonstration of Chest PT

We never had to do Chest PT on a baby. Marissa being diagnosed late and all. But I was watching that video and couldn't help but admire her patience and ability to keep the situation under control without having the baby lose it. I admire the parents who have to do this every day. I feel like a cheater using the vest now.

Do they just tell you to do all these steps in order because we are new to the CPT? Can I just consolidate it now? Melissa, how do the professionals do it in the hospital? </p></end quote></div>

We do the different segmants. Exactly as you described. Sometimes (well quite often <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">) I ask them to double up on the sides, but they do it twice as long so IMHO the same treatment is being received. The head of the therapists is a stickler about wanting each segment done individually & coughing after each. BUT as we get older & learn what works for us, the therapists work with us.

Occaisionally things will be adapted according to your needs. Like they did my left side differently a lot of the time the last hospital admit because of the chest pain. But as a rule......you are right on with what you are doing. I will say that when I first start in the hospital....if I am really congested I do NOT combine any positions. Then as I clear out I ask them to combine the sides.

Ahhh, the percusion cup! yes i do use it on Aidan. we were given it when we went to CHOP when he was 10 days old. the physical therapy team came in and showed us how to do his inhalers first then use the percusion cup to do the chest PT. Aidan is 2 now and is very used to it. he never gave us any problems and it does not hurt him at all. of course getting a 2 yr old to sit for it is hard but i put on his favorite movie and he sits still the whole time.

Watching the video, we were told not to do the chest and his back with him laying down and never ever upside down as it makes it more difficult to move the mucus. he sits up for the chest and leaning forward just over 90 degrees for his back. then he can lay down but it has to be on his side when i do both of his sides under his arms. we do the percusion cup for at least a full twenty minutes. CHOP wants me to do 40 minutes total. but i cant get that in one session. whenever i know Aidan will be sitting good for a while i just grab it and do it at any given time. he gets this twice a day after inhalers. and 3-4 times a day when he is ill.

awww, I'm so glad you guys are finding that video! I met Kristy through my local clinic, her son was one of the first in our clinic to be diagnosed through the NB screening.

I met her yesterday and she's truly a gem....for making this video and being so involved with CF!

THANK YOU KRISTY!
