Came across this same issue several years ago. When I asked the retail co. why they charged the insurance co. several hundreds of dollars more than if I bought the machine myself I was told it was because the insurance co. only pays the allowable amount (a certain percentage of the cost) and so they escalate the cost so that they will get the amount that I'd have paid outright. When I told our ins. co. about that and if I could just pay for it and get reimbursed they said no. I said, OK fine, pay $700 for a machine I can get for $139. We did not have a DME co-pay so it was zero out of pocket for us. That was back in 2002, when trying to get the Frequencer I came across the same story from that med. equip. supplier. They inflate the ins. price so that they will at least get the retail price. And we wonder why insurance costs so much.
