Another Eating Question

I am sure this has been asked a hundred times, but I could not find an old thread, so sorry for those who have probably answered a similiar question a hundred times!
I have a picky toddler who I need to get more protein into! He does not like meat--will eat hot dogs and bologna and that is about it. He will sometimes eat peanut butter. He has a feeding tube and gets two pediasures through the night but he really will not drink the pediasure during the day anymore. His weight is good, but his height is not even on the curve. (His BMI is great because he is so short!) He eats carbs and fats just fine, but I just need some ideas on boosting his protein intake. His dietician thinks that the lack of protein may be impacting his slow growth. Anyone have some ideas about good protein rich recipes, snacks, things I can add to his food, etc? Thanks so much!

Does he like yogurt? or cheese? Cottage cheese has a lot of protein in it as well -- I love it mixed with fruit such as pineapple or peaches.

Can you get him to dip his fruit? Maybe you can make a sweet dip using peanut butter, cream cheese or almond butter.

My kids love deviled eggs. Do you think he would eat those? Eggs have lots of protein.

Ditto on the peanut butter, cheese... DS isn't a big meat fan either -- chicken nuggets, hot dogs, peanut butter & sunflower/pringle sandwiches... Just started requesting fish sticks, which he apparently ate at daycare.

What about greek yogurt -- high in fat AND protein.

DS is also a big peanut and sunflower nut eater. I buy 4 pound cans of peanuts at Sam's club. The sunflower seeds have to be the kind in the jar -- if I get the salted ones in the bag, he's such a picky eater, he can TELL they're not name brand dry roasted ones. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Also, have you tried carnation instant breakfast with cream and whole milk. Personally I can't stand the smell of pediasure -- smells really vitaminy to me and DS isn't a really big fan of it either; however, he doesn't mind the CIB, which to me tastes like melted ice cream.

You've gotten a lot of good sugestions. I just wanted to chime in to remind you that you have a 2 year old, and 2 year olds are notoriously bad eaters! They pick a little of this and a little of that...it drives regulare parents crazy, let alone us "CF parents!" So, don't panic, he'll get better about it, eventually.

In the mean time, to keep his weight and height on the right track, just keep trying the same foods over and over again. Kids need to try something at least 7 times before they really know if they like it or not (My 7 year old is now very good at keeping track, so she knows when she REALLY doesn't like something! lol!). We found that trying chicken in lots of different ways worked well for Emily. She'll eat in any way now, but for a long time her favorite was shredded and mixed with cream cheese, then on top of a cracker.

Tuna was a big hit with Emily when no other protein would go over. We mixed it with mayo and shredded cheese, and again, gave it to her on crackers. She still asks for this for lunches.

Hang in there. I know how hard it is. Be patient and try lots of stuff over and over and over. He'll get there.
