Another port discussion....

I got my port when I wasn't really all that "sick". I've never thought of it as being one of those things that the "sicker people have." For me it's one of the thing that the on the go and "too busy to be bogged down by a PICC" people. In my opinion, the Port is the best option for people who want to be as independent about their care as possible. I really love that I can deal with it myself. It saves a lot of time, especially when being discharged from the hospital. I don't have to wait for a home health nurse to come to the house (they always seem so incompetent anyway). Being able to do it myself also gives me a sense of dignity with the disease. Because I can access it myself before going into the hospital, I don't have to deal with the discomfort of feeling so exposed and vulnerable as I would if I had to rely on a nurse to access it for me.

My daughter is 4 and cultured for atypical mycobacterium earlier this month. We are probably going to get a port put in sometime before Christmas so that she can start 9-12 months of IV antibiotics. One of our biggest concerns is that she is not going to be able to swim next summer. We have a pool in the backyard and my daughter loves to use it. I understand that she can swim with a port when it is not accessed. However, with getting antibiotics three times a day my thought is that it would be accessed all of the time. Any thoughts?

I am convinced.... I want one!!! Sure beats the yuckiness of a PICC especially if they can make it look almost invisible in ones chest. Accessing it looks a little bit scary at first but I am sure I would get used to it with time.

Ryan,
Which mycobacterium does she have? My son has mycobacterium abssescus and is being treated with 12-18 months of IV amikacin and tygacil. He has a port put in three months ago. At first it was hard on us. I think we associated the port with being "very sick". Also, it hurt him for a few weeks. Now he's used to it and it doesn't bother him. It has never hurt when being accessed. I'll pray for your little girl.
