Hi Everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has found any benefits to eating an anti-inflammatory diet.

YES!!!! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!

I have to say it was so hard for me to switch to this diet because since birth I had been eating crap. Pizza, Hamburgers, White bread, mashed potatoes, root beer floats, mexican food and chips.....yada yada yada. I happened to see an Oprah episode with Nicholas Perricone about the importance of the anti-inflammory diet... At the time, I was having a really tickly cough. Not productive, just hacking and itchy. But it was one of those coughs that keeps you from sleeping... and interferes with talking. I have been diagnosed with the normal allergies...dust mites, pollens, grasses...Nothing had helped me with this situation. Two years of shots, bed covers, $2000.00 on a hospital grade flter system...nothing helped. My asthma was terrible and my arthritis were becoming a real problem. My docs just told me I was progressing in my illness and that is something I just did not believe. Yes, I was progressing, but things can be done....after all, we only are addressing one aspect of the disease. No one had bothered teaching me that the inflammation does almost as much damage as the bacteria. Since we do have a inflammatory disease the idea of an anti-inflammatory diet just seemed natural...and I had tried everything else.

In the months preceeding starting the diet, I had started on gsh and had noticed many changes, but I was still struggling, so I knew I needed to address more than just glutathione. Also, I have mycobacterium abscessus...a great little bug that we believe has caused all of my problems.

Being a diabetic, insulin has been my friend since 1997. 17 units of nph and humalog sliding scale...normally, I was taking 2 to 3 shots a day. What a whip!!!
I started reading about anti-inflammotory diets and decided to do the one in the Perricone Promise. I read the book first because I wanted to understand the science behind it....It was by no means the best research ever, but enough that I got the general idea. He included many studies and years of research which I appreciated. In this book, he has a 28 day diet and that was REALLY appealing to me because I did not want o do this all on my own.

Before starting the diet, I realized there were not enough calories..so I had to supplement. I supplemented with things that were already in the diet. Tons of nut butters....except for peanuts because people who have mold allergies (hi) are most likely bothered by peanuts...who knew?

On my first day of the diet, I had low blood sugar all day long. So, the next day I cut my dose to 10units to nph...still too much. Next day...7 units. Next day 5 units. That is pretty much where I stayed. 17 units to 5 in three days...ok that was a start.

Little side story....I have had a lovely plantars wart on my toe for close to 7 years. I had it burned off 2 times and cut off once. It always came back...the dermo and my cf doc told me just to expect this little guy would be with me forever because on the scale of one to 1000, this was 999 for my immune system to handle. OK so, on day five of the diet, that wart disappeared.....I mean gone. I looked on both feet because I thought I was going crazy. Not there...my husband who had always been a litle grossed out by it was stunned. Where did it go? I took that as a sign to continue the diet.

On my tenth day, I woke up with terrible cough...smelly, productive and quite frankly, scary. I have never been a big producer of mucus so I was amazed at what I was coughing up. The darkest, foulest, thickest junk I had ever seen...this went on for 2 days.

On the 14th day, I woke up with a feeling I never have....no pain in my ankles and hips. um....now I am a believer.

On the 14th day, I also woke up with the feeling of a little tongue. Now this sounds really strange, but I can only describe it as no inflammation in my mouth or throat. That day is the day my voice changed. No clearing of mucus or anything....just this clear lovely crisp voice. I used to be an actor and this is the voice I always wanted!!! My docs wife who has known me forever saw me in a store that day and she even commented on it.

On the third week, I rushed myself to the doc because started coughing up bee-bees. Not plugs..... round hard as pebbles, no mucus or anything wet with them. I would cough and three or four of these pebbles would fly out. Scared me to death. My doc couldn't believe it..he said he had only see these post mortem because the inflammation normally walls these guys off.

As far as pfts, they only went up 10 points....but my pfts had been steady for three years so I felt like that was great. I no longer had the itchy cough, my skin glowed...I mean like, people stopping me to tell me how great I looked...LOL
I immediately saw a jump in my ability to exercise...endurance went from a 5 minute run to 16 mintue run at 6.0....no break, no out of breath....my legs gave out way before my lungs.

As far as bacteria, I went from pan resistant to pan-sensitive...I can't attribute this only to the diet however, because after the diet started (3 weeks into it) I started magnesium supplements. So, I would say that was a mix of both helping the ph in my body get back to a healthy level.

I could go on forever....I will say, I had to eat like crazy to keep my weight up...just because anti-inflammatory diets are inherently low in calories.

I can't remember the exact number but my hemo A1C dropped to a 5 or 5.1 from a 6.0.

My docs totally poopooed the whole diet...they told me it was all in my mind....
All I can say is, no doc, who believes in eating everything insight, is ever gonna believe in an anti-inflammatory diet. New research was presented at the last cf cnference about the importance of an anti-inflammatory diet..now my doc thinks I might be on to something. NICE.

One more thing, most cfers will tell you this is hogwash...mainly because they don't want to give up their comfort foods...what they have been taught all along they should eat. New research is PROVING that cfers suffer from oxidative stress not all attributed to just the disease....the one other factor....bad food causing damage.

Well I totally believe you. And 99% of doctors aren't going to give credit to any type of natural (I hate to use the word natural all the time...) but "non-medicated" treatment bc they're not taught that. They're taught the science of meds. People forget that up until the 50s people in med school were taught herbology, homeopathics, and what we consider 'natural' treatments today were part of regular medical school curriculum. Thats why you'll find some older docs that still suggest and agree with natural/alternative treatments.

A few years ago I researched the use of oral NAC, and brought it up to my then doctor who basically laughed and discredited my thoughts about it but didn't object to me using it saying that it wouldn't hurt me. Now they're doing studies on it for cf treatment-you can read about one of them on Amy's blog (I think it was there I read about it). So HAH!

The book prescriptions for natural healing has a chapter on Cf and has info on an antiinflammatory diet in it too, but I haven't looked at it recently. I'd be interested to know more about what you did, and I'll check out Perricone's book too.

Thanks so much, Mandy.

Would you mind giving me your e-mail address in case I have questions about the diet.

I am going to research it a little bit and then go for it. I know it will be extremely difficult because although I have always eaten low fat, I am a sugar-holic. I am also a picky eater.

I hope I can find enough for me to eat.
