Anyone banking cord blood?

I did not bank my son's blood and won't bank this baby's either. The chances of us needing it are so remote and it is very expensive. Additionally I believe that the cord blood belongs to the baby and it is best to let the cord stop pulsing before it it cut (which I'm pretty sure means it will be too coagulated to collect). Recent studies have shown improvement in iron stores in the baby when delayed cord cutting is practiced.

If I was going to collect it I'd probably just donate it.

I just did a quick google search and all I could find about stem cells and CF is that there is some research being done to see if they can use those cells to build lung tissue (traditionally cord blood stem cells are used to cure blood disorders). My guess is that any potential benefit of this therapy, should it become a reality, will not happen for a LONG time. I just don't see it being a benefit for me in my lifetime.

I guess I'm just not buying into the hype of *personal* cord blood banking - though I don't disagree w/ those who do it. I see a benefit in a public cord blood bank but still I think that the baby should get that blood. I'm sure I'm in the minority though <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I think it is a good idea to store babies cord blood for future therapies. It will not only benefit CF, if a treatment is found via stem cell research. It can also help cure things such as Leukemia sp? etc.

We are due to have our second baby early October, and have organised to store the cord blood in the case of any future break through's. We were willing to pay the upfront fee of approx $3000 and then $1000 for every other year its stored.

But upon researching this i have found that, here in Australia there is a prfoessor in the chn's hosp that has allowed every family of a child with CF FREE cord blood storage. Thanks to Aust Unity who support it and cover the cost in relation with bio cell and cf NSW.

He is dedicating all his time and efforts into stem cell research for CF.
