anyone have a sinus frontal obliteration?

This one really hits home. I am 46. I have CF and have had a total of 15 sinus surgeries (3 in the last 2 years). The second of these last three my ENT brought up the topic of a Total Frontal Sinus Obliteration. Not a pleasant sounding option. He said it is a last resort and one he will avoid at any cost. (Me too). After MRI's and CT's etc., he said we would remove a section of skull that divided the left and right openings to my frontal sinuses. This would allow a larger single opening that should remain open longer and easier. I have to tell you, he is the best ENT I've ever had. He did a great job of opening me up. The surgery (surgeries) have caused nerve damage in the corner of my left eye. No problems with vision or movement, just pain. Sometimes bad, sometimes just there. Either way you look at it, I'm glad he chose this option and kept me from the total oblit for now. I wish you well with whatever choice is made. Just make sure you cover all options with your ENT before making a decision. I'm sure all will work out for the best.
Take care,
Dave

Wow, sounds like everyone here with fontal sinuses have A LOT of problems from them...very interesting. My doctor told me that those with frontal sinuses and cf do experience much more sinus disease. I see we all have had many surgeries<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

my doc actually felt like the frontal oblit would put an end to my surgeries. He was concerned about more surgeries bc the bone in my nose was thinning due to all of the surgeries and infection.. I also experienced severe bleeding episode during surgery (my one right before the frontal oblit) that was caused by my high doses of advil on top of a hereditary bleeding issue on top of low vit k. My small sinus surgery that was to drill small holes into my frontl sinuses that was supposed to last 30 to 45 minutes lasted 3 hours and 45 minutes bc I almost bled out from sinus surgery....that is surgery where they never even cut me.

After that experience my doc did everything to keep me from more surgery bc he was scared about my blood loss. But, my sinus disease was so bad the last CT scan showed the infection was eating my bone in my forehead. Once an infection that bad is in bone that close to the brain, there is no other option. It was my only chance and I took it. I have had no problems and it changed the course of my sinus disease, but clearly, this approach has not worked for everyone. Personally, i have never been happier with my decision...or his. Of course, I learned that prior to the surgery (that day) my ENT was scared ****less that it wouldn't work and that i would have issues bc i was out for so long (4.5 hours) and the bone was infected.

I am so sorry Pepper that you have had such a terrible experience. I was told that if I developed a mucocele? I would have to have it removed promptly bc it can infect the bone?? Have you heard this? Is there a reason you have not have yours fixed? I am just very interested in your experience.

And Dave, I hope this last surgery will keep you from the frontal oblit...sounds like it has helped so far.

Finally, Finona, so weird you say PID and CF are sometimes seen together. A little girl I followed (Haley Palmer) had both. I also read about another person who had both a week before...very interesting.

My ENT clinic is one of the top in the country. The surgeon was very skilled. My sinuses are just very complicated. Generally fat is harvested from the stomach to fill the sinus cavities, but I was to thin, so the doctor used a fat substitute instead. I think that might hsve caused some of the problems.

Before the obliteration I had 9-10 other magor sinus surgeries. One surgery was to remove a mucocele from my right ethmoid sinus. It was pushing into the orbit of the eye socket. My right eye was being pushed down 1/3 inch lower then my left eye. My eye was very painful, almost swollen shut & I couldn't see. Don't ever let a doctor tell you sinuses can't swell!
Another surgery was to stop infected mucos that was going to my brain & several were to remove infected bone. Before my surgeries my frontals were very small, but are now large because of the infections and surgeries.
After the obliteration complications. For eight years I have begged the doctors to "fix" my forehead. But they said it was to dangerous. The bone between my sinuses and brain is to thin. About two monthes ago I meet an ENT who is willing to operate. He only does sinuses & is the best in the western states, so maybe I have some hope. I'm a little afraid to try the surgery because it would be very dangerous & complicated. But I'm so tired of being misserable.

Fiona, Thanks for the info on PID. I don't know anything about it, but I would like to be tested. Please give me more information. I have alot of problem not related to CF. My sinus/lung infections are usually flare-ups of PA, a common CF bug. Thanks Again!
