Angie - I had IVs when pregnant with my son and I trusted my perinatologist who advised which meds were safe for pregnancy. It is a risk/benefit sort of thing. It is better for the baby to have a healthy mom who can carry it to term than have a sick mom and risk prematurity, etc. And there are plenty of safe antibiotics that either won't cross into the placenta or if they do, they won't harm the developing baby. Having said that, I always try to minimize what I take during pregnancy but would do (and have done) IVs when needed.
Alisha - what you doc said (about you taking enough) is the standard practice of docs who haven't done their homework on vitamins/minerals. It takes a while for things to catch on. I went to my clinic many years ago and asked to take zithrmax as a maintenance drug because I had heard some early promising things. They said ok but hadn't heard anything. Wouldn't you know it a year later they called me and said I should take it (I had stopped in the mean time) because of the new recommendations of the CFF (I was like "I already told YOU about this, it isn't new to me"). Same thing is happening w/ magnesium and calcium and vitamin D. Only recently (within the last 6 months) has my CF clinic said anything to me about taking enough calcium and D. I suspect it will be a few more years till they say anything about magnesium. Some clinics ARE telling their patients to take it though so it is slowly getting around.
How much calcium are you getting through your prenatals and CF vitamins? How about magnesium?
P.S. I too had a boy in Feb <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
