Just curious! My DH is seriously looking into the reserves.

Every insurance we start on ends up becoming a complete nightmare. Despite my hub having a great job, we run into trouble with our prescription. Our plan suddenly changed from practical co-pays to us now owing a percentage of each of these meds!!!! INSANE!!!!!

My hub could still keep his job and be gone 1 weekend a month in the reserves. The healthcare looks amazing....I just want to make sure we read the fine print. Looks like only a small chance he'd be deployed, but you never know...I don't want this to turn into a opinionated debate on the military - - just want advice from others who have experience in the airforce/military.

Julie, if I remember right, you & your hub are in the military - any suggestions here? I know you are terribly busy, so take your time!

Thanks,

Carey

Hi Nicole - I should have been more specific, sorry. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Is your husband in the reserves? We're especially curious about the tri-care insurance and how it will cover our 3 month visits and especially our medications. From what we've gathered, it looks like our co-pays for meds will be minimal. I'm also wondering if there's a chance we could travel out-of-state for my son's CF clinic visit and still have this covered?

Thanks for any advice!

I'm in the military, Mark is not. If your husband were to join, as a reservist, you would ONLY get medical care and coverage if he were activated (meaning deployed) for more than a 30 day period. and it sounds like that's not what you want...

There is no copay for meds if you fill them at a military facility, no copay for doctors visits to a CF clinic that takes tricare (if you have Tricare Prime, which is like an HMO and you have to get referrals). If you have tricare standard, you do have copay's and can't be seen at the military treatment facility, you have to see a civilian primary care doctor. We have tricare prime and have NEVER paid a dime.

Best option would be to go active, or not at all.

My husband is active duty, so I cannot tell you how Tricare works (or does not work) in the reserves. Like Julie, we have Tricare Prime and we don't have any copays as long as we receive care at the MTF (military treatment facility). For our son's CF care we do not get care from military docs so we have to get a referral to see a civilian provider. We don't have any co-pays for those visits as long as we have the referral. As far as meds, if you fill the rx at the MTF, again no co-pays. We get Pulmozyme form there. We chose to use a regular pharmacy for most of his other meds though, just because it has been such a hassle to get them at the MTF (long story). We have a $3 co-pay for gererics and $9 for brand name. If you have any other questions feel free to ask and I can try and find out some more info for you.

I agree with julie. Reserves ONLY get benifits (pay, insurance etc) when deployed for more than 30days. My hubby join/left in Oct and we/he loves it. Pay is great, Insurance is AWESOME. I have prime and %100 coverage, you just need a pcp in the tricare network and then referals from him. I lucky had all docs in the tricare networks so everythting was easy. Meds cost some put nothing in comparison to what it would pay for insuirance. If you were wanting him to join reserves b/c he wouldn't get deploy YEAH RIGHT. Right now 60% of troops are reserves/NG of somekind

Go active or Don't go at all.

Thanks for the info, guys. My hub has talked to a couple recruiters today and it would be possible for us to have health benefits if we buy into the program. Even then, the cost would be a fraction of what we're paying now (for both coverage and meds). You're right, he could be deployed. But, because of his specific job and the state he'd be in, it looks unlikely.
