My husband is active duty, so I cannot tell you how Tricare works (or does not work) in the reserves. Like Julie, we have Tricare Prime and we don't have any copays as long as we receive care at the MTF (military treatment facility). For our son's CF care we do not get care from military docs so we have to get a referral to see a civilian provider. We don't have any co-pays for those visits as long as we have the referral. As far as meds, if you fill the rx at the MTF, again no co-pays. We get Pulmozyme form there. We chose to use a regular pharmacy for most of his other meds though, just because it has been such a hassle to get them at the MTF (long story). We have a $3 co-pay for gererics and $9 for brand name. If you have any other questions feel free to ask and I can try and find out some more info for you.</end quote></div>

Nicole,

We are also active duty AF. Have you tried the Tricare Express Scripts? My biggest hassle was getting all of Erin's meds from the MTF. I was going in all the time for her enzymes, then the ADEKS aren't covered, etc. We had quite the time getting TOBI at first. Anyway, I finally tried the Express Scripts & LOVE IT!!! You refill by phone & they mail it all to you, even Pulmozyme. My co-pays are the same as yours & they automatically charge it to my debit/credit card when I call in. It has really helped me out a lot. Also, does your son get pediasure? At first, it was a rx, but then they denied it. Now, I get it through his pcm as durable medical equipment. Don't know if this applies to you, but maybe it can help. Also, I had a hard time getting a year long referral for her CF appointments, but talked personally with a case manager & they gave me one referral number lasting for one year w/up to 12 visits. It only took a couple of minutes & I don't have to get new referral every 3 months. Again, don't know if this helps, but wanted to share my mini triumphs with another military member.

Karon,

I just filled out the application for TMOP last night! I am looking forward to using it and I'm glad that you have good things to say about it! I hate going to the pharmacy at the MTF, in fact I try to get my husband to go. Right now Danny is not on pediasure but it's good to know that info in case he ever needs it. I got a referral for his CF care when we first got here and ever since then the CF docs office call Tricare and get approval for each visit so I don't have to go back and get a new referral. At our old base his PCM gave me a referral like you have and it workd out great. I wanted the same when we got here but they gave me the "3 months is all we give" line. Anyway, I'm very happy with how his CF clinic handles it. Thanks for the info!

My husband is in the Coast guard and we have tricare prime. Karon72 can i ask how you got tricare to cover pediasure? That would be a big help for my family. My daughter would live on that stuff alone if I let her.
thanks

We went through our pediatrician on base. Erin was very low on the growth charts for some time & they considered it a medical necessity due to her low weight. At first, it was a prescription, but then they denied it because there was no funding. I went to the referral lady on base and she told the pediatrician to write it up as Durable Medical Equipment and send it through the Healthnet channels as you would a dermatology or any specialty referral. We go through a homehealth agency that delivers it to our front door. We also use the same company for her feeding tube pump and bags and anytime she needs PICC line supplies. They also send her the homehealth nurse when needed after a hospital stay. I hope this helps!

Nicole,

Our CF doc also do our referral for us here, but we are the only patients that they have to do this for, so I have to monitor the dates and remind the insurance lady to fax in the referral. One time, I just called Tricare to see if they could extend the referral to at least a year, since these referrrals are not going to stop and CF will not go away. The intial person I spoke with told me the same line "3 months is all we are allowed", so I asked to speak to a health care manager. They are nurses, if I am remembering correctly. Anyway, I spoke with the next level and asked if we could extend them since she understood that Erin will always have CF and the referrals will always be approved for the CF docs. She said she would review my request and take into consideration that Erin will always have CF and a few weeks later, we rec'd our year long referral with up to 12 visits.

If you CF clinic is good about the referrals and you don't have to worry about it, then you can ignore this <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">. It just seemed like we had to recreate the wheel every three months <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Thanks for all this info about military issues. I have been wondering if that "Express Script" thing was any good because it seems like I am always at the hospital picking up meds. Lately they have had longer and longer waits which isn't convenient, but when I walk out of there with so many meds for nothing out of my pocket it seems worth any aggravation. I have to mention, we have NEVER had to renew a referral for the downtown CF Center. I do not know how they coded my daughter, but I have never had problems getting her CF care paid/processed/whatever for 5 years so I think there is some way to plug in the lifetime diagnosis so they leave you alone for new paperwork.
Anyway, thanks for the tips.
