I'm actually a little weird because I get a thrill out of cleaning but lately I'm finding it harder and harder. Especially cleaning bathrooms and dusting so my room mate gets stuck with those jobs which makes me feel guilty. I'd love to have a maid and think if you can afford one then definitely do it- it's good for your health!

I have a maid that I love. She comes every two weeks and cleans the place top to bottom from 9-3. Each visit she picks a special project such as cleaning out the fridge or re-organizing a pantry. She rocks! She cleans and she staightens which for us we need both. My previous cleaning lady would only clean and sometimes before she was coming I was so stressed "cleaning for the cleaning lady" I really had to wonder if it was a good fit. Previously I had a team of two for 2-3 hrs for $90 but now I have one person for 5-6 hrs for $115. The new one is so much more thorough and her work ethic is unmatched. I'd go with an immigrant if deciding between two people. Call it discriminatory but I find them to be harder workers. My cleaning lady thanks me each time for having her?! My last one's seemed hacked off if I didn't have the new sheets on the bed for them to put on. I always provide my own vacuum cleaner although this one I have allowed to use hers but she keeps the filter at my home so I'm not sharing that with others. she uses vinager and water for the floors (all hardwood) and for windows/mirrors otherwise she uses harsh chemicals. it's a trade off but at least I know the bad germs are gone. She cleans the bathrooms, changes the beds, dusts, vacuums, mops, does a load of laundry, special project, oils furniture, straightens all messes and returns items she knows where they belong like clothes. If there's dishes in the sink and the dishwasher is full she empties it and loads it. She's a dream. I'm already thinking about what I should give her for her Christmas bonus :)

wow lauren-
don't let go of that one. thats pretty rare to find someone that will pick up/straighten and at that price!

my team of 4 for 3 hours is $200-250. i'm finding that their cleaning (esp dusting) is so thorough that i can go 4-6 weeks without needing it.
i chose this team bc of their allergen friendly cleaning, and that they use no chemicals to clean, all household/plant based products.

I pay only $90 every two weeks and am in a NYC suburb, but I do all the picking up and laundry before she comes--definitely a lot of work too.
She does the dusting, mopping, vacuuming, bathrooms, sheet-changing. She cleans the finished attic and polishes the furniture less frequently.
I have 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath, finished basement house with loads of old-fashioned trim and molding--dusting is a workout.
She uses my HEPA vacuum, water and vinegar for most things, but some stronger stuff for the bathrooms. She mops with hand towels that I throw in the laundry after she leaves.
I love her way of cleaning, though I should start paying her more to move furniture when cleaning. She speaks Portuguese but understands me when I speak to her in Spanish, which is way better than me who speaks Spanish but barely understands anything when she speaks Portuguese.

Honestly if I could afford it, I would sooo have a maid come in every one or two weeks! Is it a tax write off if you do use these services? That might be worth it..I know some local services that would be helpful, but they charge so much! I guess I will keep looking...<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
