appetite problems

Hi guys

What do you do when you are having a low appetite? Anything you have done or taken to try to boost it?
Since I got to the end of my 2nd trimester I have almost no appetite. It feels like when I am sick and my appetite goes away. My lungs are stable and I have no infection so thats not it. I think this is just a new thing that my cf is manifesting in me during my pregnancy. I have never had typical cf weight or appetite problems in my whole life-except the rare times I have had exacerbations like I said.

I got sick a little over a month ago and with that the appetite went out the door. I am better now and lungs and sputum are good but the appetite never came back. During my sickness I lost alot of weight bc forcing myself to eat just made me vomit. Ive put 5 lbs back on since then and the docs have me on a high calorie diet. So thats where we are. I also think that since I am so far along the baby is taking up so much room and thats contributing to it. But forcing myself to eat when I have no appetite is getting hard. I just feel gross all the time.

Sounds almost like we've got the same problem, except I'm not in my 2nd trimester!

I found a basic rule of thumb to be:
Eat something
Eat something you know will agree with you
Drink more liquids
Have soup (that agrees with you!)
Even if you're not hungry, the body needs nourishment, so take it in!

I've been off-and-on with fighting something, too. I still have occasional night sweats, and sometimes even felt feverish during the day, so my body's gone haywire, too! (Should I CHECK for pregnancy??!!) Just haven't tossed any of my cookies after my meal!

Probably with my 12 lbs. of pretzels, I've been able to keep my weight above the average (I found out I like to snack-out on pretzels and cola or Mountain Dew while gaming!), yet I've had times in which I was indecisifull about what to have for lunch, which is rare; except when I try to think of anything that doesn't contain RICE!!

Ever search on the net for what "Preggies" usually eat to keep down? How about taking supplements? At least the body can take in the nourishment during the time your appetite took a vacation!

Good Luck!
BTW, have you decided on the baby's name yet?? If it's a girl, you name it "June", and if she's early, you'll name her "May"!? If it's a boy...Ret (as in Butler)?

In times when I have had decreased appetite I have a core group of foods I KNOW I will eat and that I like and I stick to those. For example when I am sick I most always crave Lucky Charms, Oranges, Bananas, Pretzels, Peanuts and chicken wings lol. Not really sure why I crave chicken wings but I do OR Lucky Charms but hey.

You could maybe try talking to your doc about getting an appetite stimulant or something to take. I know my docs gave me Megace - or Megestrol - to take when I have decreased appetite. It is like a lemony tartness and is semi chalky tasting but overall not horrendous.

I hope that your appetite returns and that you are able to put those pounds back on.

Take Care,
Lindsey

I used to have one of those - oh, rats, I can't think of what it's called - kinda like instant b'fast but less sugar? From CFSP? And about 300-400 calories? I could drink the vanilla, but not the strawberry, and I had one every night before I went to bed. I also had to mix it with skim milk, because the whole fat milk would make me nauseated. Even an Instant Breakfast a couple of times a day if you can stand it would help. (I had gestational diabetes, so it was just the one at night for me ). That's about all I can help- sorry.

(That is so funny, and I know I'm gonna get alot of flak for this.....but I LOVE the name Rhett!!!! Its on my boy name list!! I have always loved it but my hubby said NO WAY. I'm pushing for it to be a middle name anyway, but I'm sure I'll lose.)

Thanks all so far who posted, I have a few good ideas now. I am now craving pretzels! I love pretzels and iced tea...and cereal, Lindsey. Good idea. Its easy to keep those things down.
I have been doing 2 carnation and yogurt shakes a day-thats 450 cals per shake, not bad. I can force myself to eat, but the feeling is just awful. And like someone said, thinking of what appeals to me for say lunch or dinner is impossible. Nothing appeals to me. And I'm running out of ideas.
What do you moms and dads of cfers do? You must have to force your kids to eat quite often!

"Frankly, my dear...I don't give a damn!"

Couldn't resist being the first to razz ya!!

Pretzels and ice tea...hmm...I'll have to consider that when I have no coke or Mountain Dew available!! Still got 12 lbs + worth of pretzels!!

Pretzels are about equivalent to bread, with a little extra salt, so with some sugar in your tea (honey as an option, dear?), that ought ta get you started!!
