Are children with CF more mature?

My daughter is very good at expressing herself. She has said a couple things that seem older than her years(she's only 7) lately and I guess it is not such a far leap to suggest having a chronic illness has matured her quicker than a child without.

The other day she was telling me about an older sibling of a friend who got in trouble with her parents for doing drugs. We talked about it a little and I said doing drugs is wrong, and I said something like "you would not try drugs would you?" ( Sometimes I worry because in our house "drugs" are so common meaning pills, drugs to inhale ya know the legal kind, that she might someday try the illegal kind.) Maggie looked at me with this incredible look on her face and said "No, I would never do drugs; that would be bad for my lungs, it would turn them all brown". I told her I agreed that doing drugs would be bad for her lungs and we left it at that.

Also, for our parent teacher conference the child write down 3 things that they do well at school. Maggie's # 1 comment she wrote herself as "I never give up". #2 was she can count by 2's,5's, 10's. #3 I can think and plan a story before I write. But if you think about being 7 and her first thing she did well is never give up; I don't know it makes me sad and proud at the same time.

Sounds like you have a wonderful daughter. Although I have to say what I would say I would do at 7 years old was a lot different what did do latter on. However there have been several threads on this forum where adult CFers talk about why they were so much more mature than their peers. I think on a previous thread an adult CFer said they never did illegal drugs because they rebelled by not taking their enzymes.

I think that is cool that that was your daughter's #1 answer. There are a lot of things we can learn from our kids. I can only pray my daughter would say that when she turns 7.

Sometimes I just have to sit back and just be thankful that Reyna (currently 5 yrs old) was born when she was. Twenty yrs ago I'm not sure that would be something we would hear.

CF kids are just wired to understand things a little more, think about things deeper. When I was little people remarked that I seemed wise. Now I'm not so sure about that LOL! But it's a subtle state of mind that I am grateful for at times. I always thought that it meant I had to live at a slightly higher standard.....work at things a little harder....be a better person.....etc. etc. etc.
