Are there any overweight adult CFrs on this site?

First of all...you & your daughter are both so pretty<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
Second of all, when I was in my late teens/early 20's, I used to have a candy bar & a Dr. Pepper every day during my 2 breaks at work. I was slightly overweight--I remember my CF doctor telling me that I was getting a little chunky.

Anyway, when I quit that job & went to another company where breaks really weren't taken, I noticed that I lost weight w/o even trying & I suspect it's because I wasn't eating the candy/drinking the soda anymore. So the Coke could be part of the issue.
Like everyone else has mentioned, a little extra weight is a good thing..good to have that reserve. But with me, when I stuff myself at mealtime or if I get too big due to weight gain (of course right in my tummy area), I notice that it's a little harder to breathe...possibly weight pushing up on my diaphragm? So for this reason I try not let it get too out of hand.
When I've coughed a lot, my ribs do get very sore. I compare it to feeling like I've been in a car wreck, or I feel like I have broken ribs or something. It usually goes away after a couple of days.
I hope this has helped

I was always skinny when I was younger-healthy skinny, but still thin. I had bowel problems up until a few years ago, got my enzymes adjusted and now I'm gaining weight-why? B/c the enzymes are working and I'm getting the right dose. So just b/c you are chunkier does not mean you are pancreatic sufficient. If you are taking your enzymes and are bigger, you probably take too many calories. I asked my doc if I should cut back, maybe I didn't need as many b/c my weight was obivously fine and she said no way-the reason I was gaining weight was b/c the enzymes were right. And it was no more typical "i can eat anything I want cf diet" for me! Since most of us were raised that way-its hard to break that pattern.

Clara,
I don't have CF. But, I am a parent of a daughter, w/cf who died at age 18. I have a son, w/cf, who is currently 47. Who also is currently trying to get on the transplant list. Somewhere in the last 10 or so years, he has gained weight like crazy. He is 5'11" and currently and for quite a while weighs around 200 and at times has actually gone over 200. His CF doctor has never been too upset with his weight. My wife and I have! It is our belief that with the excess weight, there is pressure on his diaphram/lungs which makes it harder for him to breathe properly. I/we may be wrong, but I truly believe that too much weight is not a good thing, for you with CF or myself with COPD (on O2 24/7). I am not trying in anyway to be negative to your or my son's weight. But, I would like you (and my son) to think about how TOO much weight might affect your Lung function. Enough said! It will be a benifit for long hospitalizations! Both of you have the weight to survive a long/serious hospital trip. But, how does it help today? God bless you Clara and all who are on this web site. May you reach the proper weight, what ever that is. May you live a long and happy life!!! Bill

Thank you Bill for your post. I completely understand your worries for your son and the expressed worry for my health. But yes, my doctor does say that the excess weight around my lungs is bad because my lungs don't fill up as much as it should and in return has affected my FEV1. It has gone down and gone up and gone down again as i gained or lost weight. And i am at risk for diabetes. It's just such a hard thing to do. I try a couple of days but i don't seem to have the determination and will power i should have.

I get down on myself and my husband gets upset because he says i am beautifula and not to stress over that but i do because i know it's important.

Well Bill...I wish you and your son nothing but the best and i hope your son gets his new lungs fast...and that the entire process comes out great with flying colors.
