Are you always on antibiotics?

Just curious if you are always on antibiotics? My daughter is always on Bactrim once a day, but it can change depending on what she grows. So, she never has a break from antis..Just wondering if there are people with CF that aren't on anti's on a daily basis. This includes things like TOBI or other inhaled meds.

DS has always been on abx, since day one. Prophylactic Keflex, then Septra twice a day after culturing steno. maltophilia at age 4, zithromax for inflammation and tobi.

Liza, out of curiosity what do his cultures usually show now? Emily's cousin with cf went in for IV's after culturing steno malt and it never recurred vs. going on orals for years. Is steno malt considered one of the more dangerous ones?

My study drug is Bactrim and I've been on it since being diagnosed at 21 (I'll be 34 Thursday). I double up when I'm sick with Azythromicin, Cipro, Amoxicillin, or K-flex. The only time I stopped the bactrim and took another antibiotic was durring an admission when I was 30.

My doc has given me the ok to stop the Bactrim when I am feeling well; but only for a little while (Like 2 to 4 weeks) and only when I am feeling well with no cultures.

I was on Dicloxacillin from the day I was diagnosed(a baby) until I was a teen, and then I was taken off the Dicolx because of the whole abx resistance issue. Since then only take abx when I am sick (sinus infection, really bad chest cold, or an exacerbation), which is about 3-4 times a year. There was a period where I was culturing PA and had to be on colistin every other month, but I stopped culturing it about 3 years ago and now culture either Staph or nothing.

His last culture was clear, although he always cultures something, so I think that was a fluke.

The septra originally took care of the steno. malt. Our local cf clinic doesn't normally treat it, but his CF doctor in the city opted to do. Only symptom he had was an odd dry throat clearing cough, which we thought was just a habit. It disappeared within days of being put on the septra. I believe steno. malt. is becoming more of a common cf bug.

His cultures since then have been a mixed bag. Stopped culuturing non-mucoid pseudomonas, but then cultured pseudo florensen (sp) once. His most recent culture was two different strains of steno malt and a really odd one called bruvundiam something or other.

I'm hoping that someday we can get a true sputum culture to determine what exactly he may be growing, but he never has had a productive cough or much mucus. I also have reservations about how the local cf clinic does their cultures.

I have pretty much been on antibiotics non-stop since I was a kid. I think it was pretty rare that I was off of them - I always remember inhaling Gentamycin or taking Keflex or Bactrim. I have been on Tobi and/or tobramycin since i was 13.

Currently I am on Zithromax M-W-F and either tobramcyin (w/eFlow) or Cayston. If I am off antibiotics, I get sick fairly quickly.
