http://thorax.bmj.com/content/57/6/559.full

I found this article that outlines a case of a person with pseudomonas infecting her parents w/o CF, one of whom had no bronchiectasis, the other did.

I mostly thought I'd share because it is interesting--not to scare people--this was a unique case in terms of the strain of pseudo.

However, I sure am planning to cover my mouth better when I cough, especially around my 9-yr-old who's had pneumonia twice and post-nasal drip from Oct-May despite "no allergies." And if he doesn't get over his week-long cough and cold in a couple days, I may ask for a sputum culture/throat swab for him.
This is scary. It makes me wonder about careers for future CFers that may be eliminated if this is publicized. It already is a scary thing to be a teacher with MRSA, since MRSA is so public now. I, too, worry about my children. Especially my two-year-old who seems to be constantly sick. Although that may be him just being a toddler.

That's an interesting and scary point, though I think this strain was pretty unique, and the article discussed that the parents were involved in her CPT routine--also that the mom w/o bronchiectasis may have had pre-existing but sub-radiological lung damage.

Definitely chalk it up to being a toddler at this point :) My other two kids, who don't have a history of pneumonia and chronic morning cough, still seemed to be super virus-y (upper respiratory and barf) from about 1.5-3.5 yrs.

This is pretty scary to me. One of my parents has experienced chronic respiratory infections, but refuses to get a culture (he's in his 60s and set in his ways). I've suggested it many times, based on observation of symptoms and medications that he has/has not responded to. I just wish that I could convince him to get cultured, because he would have a better chance of recovery if his pathogens' sensitivities were known.

Does he see a pulmonologist? If not, maybe convincing him to have an appt with one would be a start. He could get PFTs too, which would be good. Ask him if he might at least ask the pulmo about getting a culture.

It is amazing how the broad spectrum antibiotics have changed how most people's respiratory infections are treated. I remember my father-in-law, an older orthopedic surgeon, being appalled that my pre-bronchiectasis-dx pneumonias weren't cultured. When he was in med school, the general population was given sputum cultures with pneumonia. Nowadays: here's some Levaquin. (And it did work for a few yrs...)
