Aspergillus

I just found out today that my culture from Duke grew Aspergillus. I know NOTHING about this. I honestly wouldnt have found out about it if my local pulmo Dr. didnt call my CF Dr about how I am feeling right now. My CF Dr mentioned it, so my local pulmo Dr called me back and asked if I knew about it...the answer to that was no. My CF Dr had an office personal call and ask if I wanted to go into the hospital this weekend, I said no I didnt think I was that bad. There was no meantion of the Aspergillus results, no one had called to tell me (I will be saying something about that when I talk to them). Right now, I am coughing like crazy to the point that my muscles hurt. I am carrying a fever on and off, my sats have dropped within the past 2 days, and I am coughing enough that I am not getting a lot of sleep. I thought it was my sinuses. Guess not. Last time I went to clinic on 8/28, they told me my chest x-ray was unchanged, I looked good and my PFTs were stable (FEV1 30 to 28). I did a sputum culture then too. I do not know which culture it came from, the one from hosptial admittion in July, or the one from a few weeks ago. I guess this could explain why no matter how many IVs I have been on I continue to be in a cycle of relasping since Oct. Would the Apergillus show up in my chest x-ray? How bad is this bug? How much damage can it do and how fast? How do u know if it is just Apergillus fungus or ABPA? Does your sputum look different than normal or when you cough up PA or MRSA? If anyone can give me ANY kind of information on this, I would greatly appreciate it! I have never had a fungus before. I dont know what to do to get rid of it or if it will ever go away at all. I'm going to hit the net and see what I can find. Thanks in advance.

Okay first of all big breath. I was freaking out when I found out I had it the first time. The doctor should run and IgE level asap to find out if you are in an allergic state. if your igE level is normal then you do not have ABPA is my understanding. It is also my understanding that if you do not have ABPA then the Aspirgillus is pretty docil. It is not generally treated unless you are ABPA. I culture Aspirgillus but have normal igE levels. There were a lot of posts on this subject when I first cultured it back in '06. Try searching this site for those posts. Canadian Liz was very helpful. She also has Aspirgillus but not ABPA. Mom2Lillian has ABPA I believe and has done some unique abx treatment for it since the normal antivirals weren't that effective if I recall correctly.
