Average daily amount of mucous production?

Hello all. Just joined the forums, and thought I'd ask a quick question that's been on my mind.

A little background first to introduce myself (I'd do this in the welcome thread, but since I'm posting this thread anyway, I may as well do it here):

I am a 23 year old male with Cystic Fibrosis (Delta F508 mutation). I was diagnosed when I was 4 from a sweat test. I've never really had many lung problems with my CF (I didn't even culture any bugs in my sputum until I was 17 or so!).

Currently, I have MRSA and PA in my lungs, but they don't seem to be doing much of anything. My weight is beyond stable (I could stand to lose a good bit of weight, actually!), my last PFT result was 120% of predicted overall with an FEV1 of over 100. I've never been hospitalized except for a bout of pneumonia my entire family caught (and had to be hospitalized for!) back in 2005. I quickly recovered from that with no long term effects. I also have very mild Bronchiectasis which wasn't even diagnosed until I was 20 or so.

I'm currently on Pulmazyme, inhaled Tobi, oral Ciprofloxacin and
oral Guaiphenesin (it's an OTC expectorate that works WONDERS for me; it makes it incredibly easy to evacuate mucous). And I'm thriving like crazy!

Anyway, I was actually curious since I couldn't find the information online: how much mucous does the average person with CF produce in a day? I know this can vary from day to day and there isn't really an "average" CF case. But just... on average, I guess. I can sorta remember, as a kid, my doctor at the time saying something like 1 cup a day or something, but that really seemed excessive since I've never really coughed tons of junk out and if I had tons of mucous in my lungs, my lung functions surely wouldn't be nearly as good.

What are your experiences with how much overall mucous you produce in a 24 hour period?

Thanks all!

Hey welcome to the boards! It's great to meet you.

As far as how much is produced I have no idea. Some days I can get stuff out and others I can't. I've never been able to cough alot out unless I have an infection.

A cup seems way excessive!! I would think someone would drown in their own mucus how much that is! But who knows maybe it is true. Producing it and getting stuff out are two different things IMO. My upper lobes are decent but my lower and middle lobes are packed with junk. So who knows maybe I do have a cup full in there

Oddly enoughly, I have heard of much healthier people than me coughing up much more than me. When I was younger I couldn't cough hardly anything out. Now that I am sicker I cough up 4-6 oz a day, but I have heard of people doing up to a cup.
