I don't know if everyone but me already knew this but will put it out there anyway, it might help somebody.
I recently went to see the doctor and was asking about trying to get a recent flair up under control. We decided to go to a daily dose of Axuthromycin when she explained to me that bacteria don't build up a resistance to it. It doesn't actually kill bacteria, just weakens the stuff around the bacteria so your white cells can do a better job. If any of you are like me and worried about making resistant bugs you might ask your doc about it.

Have you checked the cff site? I seem to recall a few articles explaining what it does... I did a quick search and found this one... Not sure if it helps. http://www.cff.org/treatments/Therapies/Respiratory/Azithromycin/

DS has been on it for the past 6 years.

Zithromax is NASTY stuff, it really does a number on many other parts of your body, in my eyes it almost encourages apoptysis. It does a number on protein synthesis process as well. That being said for someone with CF it's a good thing to be taking. Me personally I stopped taking it a while ago and have seen no change. Also because because it is used in the treatment of other infections like MAC iirc it can create problems if you ever do get MAC because it will not be as effective. People think that is predisposes you to these things which is not true.

I too have stopped taking prophylactic Azithromycin for pretty much exactly the things that Incomudrox has mentioned.

Yeah, I'm with Incomudrox and Havoc on this one. I tried zith for about a year and it seemed to provide very little help (translation- no difference) and gave me increased GI issues and other stuff. Wasnt worth it. I've found that simple ibuprofin 3X a day seems to help me more and doesnt have any side effects (for me).

I have found that azithromycin has helped my asthmatic component dramatically. I used to be very brittle in that regards, but since azithromycin was introduced into my regimen, my bronchospasms have really improved. So I guess that is one good thing that has come out of it <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I have been on Zithromax 500 mg every Mon/Wed/Fri for over 6 years now. The past 6 years has been the healthiest I have ever been in my memory needing no hospital stays or IV meds. My Dr. has left it up to me if I want to stop it or not but he says if it ain't broke don't fix it. I also started Hypertonic Saline at just about the same time as the Zithro so it very well could be the Hypertonic is the reason for my good health or it could be a combo of the both. He has talked about trying to do some more research studies on the long term use of Zithromax but said he can't seem to get any other Dr's interested in doing it with him.

I have done azithromycin twice - the first time it made me feel a lot better but tore apart my stomach. My stomach hurt so much that I was more miserable overall, so I stopped taking it. That was over 5 years ago. Three months ago my doctor asked me if I wanted to give it another try, so I did. He did say he's not sure he believes it really helps that much, but thought it was worth trying. This time, I don't really notice that I feel any different, but it hasn't hurt my stomach either. I haven't been CF sick since starting it, but it's only been three months so it could just be coincidence.

I'm also nervous about the studies suggesting it may make you susceptible to MAC. I'm going back to clinic this week and planning to ask my CF doctor about it. Incomudrox, what did you know about that not being true?
