Bactrim - Allergic reaction

Wow, Thanks Mom's for the support and advice.
I sent him to school today, Monday 10/19 after a quiet weekend, very little rash left this morning, but today Sam's ears hurt and I have been looking up bactrim side effects. I am thankful for the person with CF that said, her parents did not allow her to stay home for minor things, but then how do we know what will remain minor?
Harriet, can you tell me what happened and with Emily's reaction to a medicine?
I recall reading on here about a CFER who had a sever reaction to cipro and even though these may be the minority, I a concerned.
I love this web site and I am so thankful for all the participants!

Fortunately, it was *not* Emily that had the drug reaction- it was me. I was on Bactrim for a sinus infection and after being on it for 2 weeks I developed what seemed to be a minor rash on my wrists. I thought it was due to a soap or lotion I was using due to location and how minor it looked (tiny red bumps, only mildly itchy.)

The rash gradually spread over more of my body and got worse in appearance. I took Benadryl (it was late at night and I didn't know what else to do) but things ended up getting much worse. I started running a very high fever, throwing up, the rash got worse, and my face, neck & throat started to swell. I needed epinephrine, IV antihistamines & steroids to get things under control at the hospital and a long course of oral steroids once I got home; I had a rash that lasted for weeks and shed large areas of skin as it healed.

It is not common to have an allergic reaction to that level of severity, but it can't be discounted as a possibility, especially when a rash spreads to the face or any mucous membranes or if a fever develops at the same time. Certain drugs are also more notorious for causing this kind of reaction and Bactrim/Septra is on that list.

Fortunately, even though I am severely allergic to Bactrim, Emily tolerates it fine. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
