Bactrim - Allergic reaction

I sent my son to school today and I feel so guilty.
Sam broke out from a rash that started small on his stomach, but I saw signs of it appearing on his face neck and arms, The nurse said to give him benedryl and he would be fine.
Sam came home from school with a head ache yesterday, and I learned he spent an hour in the sun for an earthquake drill, the sun and bactrim do not mix well.
Parenting children with chronic illness is challenging on days like today when I wanted to let him stay home from school, BUT sam has missed so many days already.
What do other parents do when their children have allergic reactions?

I am also allergic to Bactrim, and it started when I was in middle school. I remember having a reaction on my stomach area while I was in class and it itched and itched and itched. I couldn't even concentrate in class because I just had to keep scratching! But you know what, my parents did not pity me and let me stay home for minor illnesses. I had to go to school like everyone else. Of course if I was really sick with a virus I could stay home. But then again, I was a little bit of a "nerd" in school and I loved to be there and didn't want to miss it for anything (I know, I was strange...ha). I wouldn't feel bad for sending him. Sometimes we need to learn how to cope with things we are dealt and I'm sure your little guy did just fine at school. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

If it's a known, predictable reaction w/ certain meds and something that you are used to dealing with, dosing with Benadryl, etc is about all you can do... like you said they can't stay home for everything.

However, drug reactions can be severe, even life-threatening (as we have learned here from personal experience.) If it was the first time that I saw a spreading rash with a particular antibiotic (especially around the face) I would want to err on the side of caution (keep an eye on it, call the doctor if it became severe, as it's impossible to know the first time you see it whether or not it will be 'fine.') JMO; but going through an anaphylactic reaction and subsequent SJS rash will do that to you.

I hope everything is indeed fine! It is hard... when they miss school a lot we hate keeping them home when we don't have to. My caution is colored by bad personal experience and the 'you just never know' factor.
