Hi Jenny,
I'm so sorry you are in this situation but whatever you decide remember you are doing your very best for your baby and yourself. I too have been told by my CF centre - the national centre for Ireland - that they now routinely use Tobramycin for pregnanct CF women - I did IVs about a month ago but agreed with them that since it was a relatively mild infection I would just use Fortrum (Ceftazadime) as I was reluctant to take Tobramycin especially as I hadn't hit 12 weeks then.

I think you're right to seek a 2nd opinion from your usual doc for reassurance but if you decide in the end to do the Tobramycin (I wouldn't rule it out for myself if I become significantly unwell while pregnant) don't beat yourself up - you are doing your best to keep yourself well - we all have to weigh up these decisions for ourselves - with the help of good medical advice.
I know there is a risk with Tobramycin but there huge risks to a serious infection too. After a quick google search this is the most comprehensive piece I found about Tobramycin and pregnancy:

Wishing you all the very best,

PS have my own appt with my clinic on Mon and wouldn't be surprised if I end up in a similar discussion to you - I think I am brewing an infection at the moment - will let you know how it goes

I'm sorry you are going through this..... it's like our CF doctors want to do what's best for our CF and our obgyn's want to do whats best for baby... but there is definitely a danger/risk in harming the fetus in using Tobra IV's while pregnant... I would ask if your sputum is sensative to any other combo of drugs.....I just grew out MRSA and Pseudamonis and I'm currently on Zosyn & Aztreonam IV's, both of which are safe while pregnant (category B drugs).

He may know of CFers that had healthy babies without damage who have used Tobra while pregnant, but that doesnt mean something wont happen to your baby. I know this is so difficult, but just say you want more options that are safer for the baby..

Hang in there & I hope you are able to find something... feel better soon too!!!!
