My daughter complains of her stomache hurting quite frequently. They've up enzymes, changed enzymes, did a CT scan, tried Miralax (and others). They just can't seem to find anything wrong. Anybody else have these problems and what was your outcome.

Oh and her stools are fairly loose. They just changed her enzymes (sorry I can't remember what kind and she's still in the hospital) which made her a little constipated so they started giving her a stool softener.

Would appreciate any input.

Thanks.

If they did an xray of her abdomin & it doesnt seem to be "backup" then I would go with the need for more enzymes IF her stools show floating, greasy etc or just not quite enough being obsorbed & does she get anything for acid. All the meds going into our bodies we often need something to counteract the acid build up whether it be prescription, occ (not usually recommended I dont think) or herbal (still controversy, but many are starting to lean this way). Hope they find answers!

This is interesting because Katy has been complaining of her tummy hurting for about 10 days now. It is almost like pre-diagnosis tummy complaints. Her stools are definitely post-dx 'normal', as in mostly sinkers, no grease, but she is sometimes having to go three times within 30 minutes to completely 'finish' the process.

The pedicatrician did a general exam on her last week and found nothing. We have a CF appointment in a couple of weeks. I feel like other moms who have posted recently - every sniffle, cough, fever, change in poop has you fearing the absolute worst.

I agree with Melissa about the antacid/proton pump inhibitor. We definitely notice a HUGE difference if we miss Katy's Prevacid (which we don't miss anymore, believe me). I hope your docs can get it figured out.

We have in fact had this problem and our solution layed in the antacid. My older daughter was having horrible tummy aches in the mornings. Almost every morning she was crying in pain-stools were loose, but that is 'normal' for her. She was already at the max with her enzymes for her weight. She took her prevacid in the mornings, and by afternoon was fine. So we started giving her one half dose of prevacid in the morning and one half doese of prevacid at night. And it took away the tummy aches. That is the only thing we changed. Apparently, she had so much acid build up as the day and night progressed, that by morning she was miserable. It was such an easy fix. She even started gaining weight again, which had slowed down for a while. The enzymes just were not working as well in digesting the fats/proteins because of all the acid in there! Ask her doctor about trying something like prevacid if she is not already taking something. And splitting the dose in am and pm may help as well

They actually have her on prevacid twice a day now and changed her enzymes so I guess we'll see what happens. She's been in the hospital for 6 days now and it's decreased a little, but not much. She's lost weight too. And she doesn't need to lose any. She's short and the highest she's weighed in at was 60 lbs. She's down to about 57. I think that was another reason they wanted to keep her a few more days. They wanted to fatten her up.

Thanks for the help and letting us know that we're not the only ones dealing with this. I just hate to see her in pain. It really can affect her day.

There are some natural ways to reduce acid if you feel it is due to too much acid in the stomach. Missa just posted about using Apple Cider Vinegar to help...1/2 tsp before meals (can mix in a bit of juice or sweetened with honey/agave). She noted her son's stools changing to one time daily and less loose ones. He also gained well. I have not tried this myself but would if he began showing signs of reflux/acidity again (this was a huge problem in the beginning...he is now off meds for it).

In addition, you may want to consider inflammation of the gut as a source of discomfort. Several natural products can work to balance this out. One is of course probiotics. The other is oral GSH, tumeric, and DHA. These can be used in conjunction with each other to help reduce inflammation in the digestive tract (and throughout the body). Most Docs won't have any objections to these.

We have used a probiotic since 7 weeks old and see a big difference if he goes off for a while. We also have treated temporary inflammation with oral GSH + Tumeric and saw immediate results. We give DHA daily (200mg daily) and just began Tumeric daily as well. We use New Chapter for Tumeric, TheraNaturals for GSH products, have used Culterelle or PrimaDophilus Kids, and NordiNaturals Kids Strawberry flavor DHA.

It is worth trying these benign, food based supplements as they are gentle and have no side effects. You could consult with a Naturopath to get a better idea of her unique issues and dosing if you are unsure. These along with food can help balance the body, especially with all the meds our kids take sometimes. I believe it can even prevent issues. I hope something helps soon...tummy trouble is so distracting.

Warmly,

My daughter is 6 and has had tummy pains for as long as I can remember. She has been on prevacid for a few years now. Her stools are rarely an issue. We see a gastro from time to time and got a call recently that she has to go for a gastrointestinal cleaning (sounds like fun doesn't it?) . They want to make sure that there is not a mucus build-up in the intestines, much like in the lungs.
I wish I had the answer to this because it can be frustrating.
It is great to have a forum like this to exchange ideas and know that we are not alone.
