Best birth control?

I'm 17 years old with CF and I want to know which is the best option for someone my age, especially with IV antibiotics being necessary about 3 times a year. Also which options insurance would pay for, and if I should talk to my pulmonologist about it. Thank you in advance!

I'm 18 years old with CF and my boyfriend and I have started talking about sex and the obvious idea of having it. I want to make sure I'm on birth control before we get to that but I have serious trouble absorbing pill. For example, I'm on 70,000 units of vitamin D a day and still have a blood level of 17 which is way under the normal.

Best birth control is not having sex. If you aren't ready for the responsibility that comes with it at this age you probably shouldn't be having it plain and simple. That being said Depo shot works pretty well and may cause weight gain which isn't bad for us CFers.

Hi Fae,
Yes, I think you should talk to your pulmo (they should prob know just about everything going on w/ you) Have you discussed it with your gynecologist ? You should know what all your options are & what risks each option has.. You are being responsible by asking questions..

Yeah, get an appointment with an OB-GYN and get a prescription for some birth control pills, and make sure your CF doc is also on board. I remember when I first started taking them I was worried that being on antibiotics would make the pill less effective. My CF doc said that it wouldn't be a problem. For your reference, I take Microgestin Fe 1/20 and they've worked great for me for years.

Good luck!

I would recommend Seasonique, the pill that you only get your period 4 times a year. Im 30 and have been on it for 2 years and have noticed that I get sick less with only having my period every 3 months. Im not sure if it is the hormones or just not being anemic as much with having my period less, but its been working very well for me.

how about condoms? it is the most simple way to have safe sex. Besides, you'll be protecting yourself from sexually transmitted diseases.

Pills have another problem, if you have diarrhea or if you puke they might not work.

Abstinence is the best birth control.

If you're going to have sex anyway, you need to use BOTH a long-term birth control AND condoms. And none of it is a guarantee against pregnancy. The pill and implants do a great job of preventing pregnancy, but not STDs. Condoms are the only line of defense against STDs, but have a 3% failure rate.

I use implanon and really like it. It's a rod inserted into you arm that lasts three years. I also used nuvaring and liked that too. I couldn't handle the pill, made me crazy.

On a side note: 70,000 units of vitamin D!?!?! My level has been stuck 19 for the past year, and so I'm on 10,000 units a day...guess it's good to know that i'm not the only one who is stuck with low vit d

If you're not ready to have a kid, you're not ready to have sex, plain and simple. (coming from an almost 19-year-old).

We had a a guest baby in class the other day for observation--cutest thing ever, but the child of young, irresponsible parents who had essentially made this child a Shaken Baby. Brain damage, cerebral palsy, the whole 9 yards.

I'll get off my soap box now.
