blood doning

I asked our local Red Cross once when my DH gave blood. They told me no. They wont let ppl that have asthma give blood, and since CF is along the lines of asthma as far as issues with breathing, they told me no. They use a 14 ga. needle, my veins are too small for those. Plus, I didnt meet the weight requirement, which I think was 120lbs. Also the medicine's I was on probably played a factor into it.

I think most centers will accept blood with people from CF in theory (and I've definitely donated before) but most will not accept blood from anyone who's had recent IVs or serious infections, which lets out a lot of CFers anyway. There's nothing in the blood with CF that makes it unusable or unsafe for others though.

Diabetes or CFRD might add another level to the equation. My guess is that most centers would discourage diabetics from giving blood, for their own safety. Giving blood can cause a serious drop in blood sugar even for healthy folks, and it's probably not worth the risk.

So nice of you to want to donate though! It's great to see people with CF reaching out to others who suffer from illnesses. We're all in the same boat. Maybe if you can't give blood you could consider growing out your hair for locks for love (they make wigs for children who have lost their hair to chemo) or some other way of helping out others without jeopardizing your own health.

from what i read on the link posted in another post above, cf, diabetes, and asthma is not an issue, and it said that it depended on what meds you are on and it didn't say a thing about low vitamin levels so i don't know about that
