Vinegar is a natural cleaner. I used vinegar in lots of my cleaning projects including my nebs and flutter.

I believe it changes the pH of the water, which makes it less likely that the minerals will settle out of the water.

I use vinegar as well. After every use I handwash and boil each neb. But every couple of days after I handwash I soak them in vinegar for about 10 minutes and rinse them out before putting them in the boiling water. That keeps the film from builfing up on them. I also notice that bringing the water to a strong boil for about 10 minutes before putting the nebs in help as well.

I use plain tapwater to boil nebs, but we have a water softener, which keeps the film from building up, unless SOMEONE forgets to buy salt.

I use distilled water also, buy the big giant 5 gallon containers. My question, my son only has hypertonic saline and Pulmozyne that he nebulizes daily.

While the CF client has recommend cleaning the nebulizer after each use, I only do it once ever 3 to 5 days. We have two different cups, so I only use Pulmozyne in the Pulmozyne cup and the HTS in the HTS cup. Does anyone else do this, and what risks am I running with my son?

Input and personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

Darn Hard Water....we have that problem!!! We do one of two things. Either we use tap water and add in some vinegar. Or we buy bottled water, it doesn't have to be distilled water.

Jeff, I believe the risks of not sanitizing and drying your nebs after each use, is bacteria growing in the moisture left in the neb cups.

blessings,
missa

Ditto... It's the hard water. We never did anything about it no vinegar, no distilled water or bottled water. It's just some steralized mineral buildup. It won't hurt anyone. But I may have used some vinegare if I had know about it. I guess none of the parents where I'm form are bothered by it. Or the clinic staff.

I get the white residue also but use the nebs w/ it on them. I have 4 sets of nebs per med. so I dont have to boil nebs every day. It's important to use soap & water before you boil them !

JennyC, vinegar is an acid and is thought to help disinfect the neb's while boiling. It's also a great cleaning product because the acid breaks up mineral particles and grimy yuck (usually from soaps or preservatives) on various surfaces. My kid's doc said that "evidence-based practice proved that it's not very effective as a disinfectant" because it is very mild and has to sit on something for an extended amt of time to kill organisms, but we use it sometimes anyway. I also run a bit of vinegar through the empty dishwasher, then run baking soda through it and it keeps it sparkly clean and smelling fresh. Jeez, I think I'll do a commercial promoting vinegar...
