Bowl Obstruction

I usually get mild bowel obstruction.... once in a blue moon I get a horrible one. Gotta horrible one right now. My stomach is bloated and very tender.

I am doing Miralax 2 times a day and things are starting to move. Still in considerable pain (feel like I have done 3 million situps). Nurse gave me permission to do 3 doses of Miralax for a couple of days...2 doses for a couple days and so forth. I have also been told to drink lots of water to deal with possible dehydration.

Is there anything else I can do?? We are going to do some Go Lightely (spell??) this weekend if the Miralax doesn't do the trick. I would really rather not do the Go Lightely. That stuff is miserable.

I just wish things would move a bit quicker... so uncomfortable!!! <img src="i/expressions/proudfart.gif" border="0"> <img src="i/expressions/bathroom.gif" border="0">

Hi Mamerth,

So sorry to hear about your bowel obstruction! I really hope it gets better <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

I had about 5 bowel blockages back in 07 so I know the feeling, very painful and not nice <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

To clear my bowel blockages, I was given Gastrograffin (which is horrible stuff btw) it's actually an x-ray dye you drink but also has the effect of a laxative as well.
What they did with me is, after my blockages had cleared, my doc ordered several tests to be done which included a Colonography, gastroscopy, etc.
At the end of it all...turns out that I also have IBS on top of my c.f digestive problems.

Anyway the bowel specialists told me that the laxatives I was using were making my bowels worse, so they put me on a gentler laxative called Movicol.
With Movicol each dose is in a powder form and comes in a sachet. You mix it up with water when you need to use it.

What movicol does is it draws moisture into the bowels and soften the stools.
Unlike other laxatives were it just greases the stools.

Something else I have found to be very beneficial for my bowels is electrolyte sachets that you can buy from your pharmacy. Their not your typical powerade drinks. They have less sugar content in them and I find that they hydrate me really well.

Don't know if you've tried this already though?

Hope this helps.

So sorry to hear this. My doc has me to Miralax but he also said I can take Mineral oil to keep things lubricated. I think the oil works really well. Maybe try that and it is cheap too.

Feel better!

I used to get obstructions all the time, but I always had total obstructions, needed surgey once.

What always, always, always works for me is the gastrographen like the other CF talked about. They used to have me drink it but also gave me gastrographen enemas which worked so fast it was so weird.

Feel better

Though I don't suffer from bowel obstructions, I do know a thing or two about it. Hydration is a wonderful idea. Eat a high fiber diet. Lastly exercise especially aerobics, walking, and jogging. Just get moving. ack! That wasn't punny. (O_O)

ugh, I'm sorry you're going through this <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

I used to get terrible bowl obstructions before I was dx with CF and went to the emercency room each time b/c i could not walk the pain was so bad. They did everything from laxatives, enemas, etc. NOT FUN at all and nothing seemed to work.

After being dx with CF I've only had the problem a couple times b/c I've been on miralax every day...I'm been given the OK to take 2-3 doses/day if I notice a problem. When I did get a blockage, I was given GoLightly...terrible stuff, make me want to puke, but it worked.

After taking golightly I was on the toilet for over an hour and couldn't get up. This makes no sense, but I had diahreah, but still felt constipated...felt better after a few days though

hope yours clears up soon!!
