Bronchial Embolization

Lauren, I wouldn't look at an embolization as a way to stop bleeds, it's not the answer! we bleed for so many different reasons! The reason I have had so many is because my bleeding becomes life threatening, the first one I had was because I bled a couple times in the day etc... and yes it was to help so the bleeding wouldn't be so much and turn life-threatening, too bad three days later was my worst episode and my first ventilation and given 24-hrs. to pull out of it or die!

All I'm saying is like Lisa said I've never volunterily just 'scheduled' an embolization I've had to go to the hospital because the bleeding was getting worse and worse. And in my opinion I don't think you can do an embolization 'in advance' and hope that it will help. It is hard to find the ones that bleed, all they do is clot off the ones that look enlarged and irritated.

Trust me I know a lot about this, they have taken my procedures to conventions and stuff and talked about me! I have bronchial arteries growing off of places that they shouldn't! and ones that will keep on growing even though they have been clotted off at all angles! Lucky me!!!! We all hate to have bleeds but there is no answer now as to why it happens and no answer to stop it.

So from your vast experience Hairgirl, would you suggest I wait until I have a life threatening bleed or do a proactive strike on enlarged vessels that are causing my almost daily bleeds? I realize it won't be a cure for bleeds but I'm just wondering what sort of harm I'm doing to my lungs by having frequent blood for going on 15 years!

I believe I have multiple spots that bleed in my right upper lobe and one or two in my left upper as well.

I have been bleeding since I was like 12 and didn't have an embolization until I was 22, honestly I don't know if having blood in your lungs affects them or makes them more prone to infection, I'm just saying I don't think the doc will just let you say 'I want an embolization' because if you haven't had a recent bleed it is very hard for them to see places to clot off and because of the risk (I know I've minimized it) they really ask you twice about it, seriously my IR people are the ones that don't want to do anymore embolizations on me instead of the other way around!

So all in all, it's up to you and the dr.s they can do cat scans etc... but from my experience they can't tell where the most bleeding is coming from and therefore the embolization is only as effective as what they are able to find. I mean time after time we keep thinking that we got the one that was troubling me they will say 'ah, we found such and such and it was definately a problem one' but nope, bled again, or they won't be able to get to places because of scar tissue, other coils, or just because the bronchial arteries are just too twisted and irritated.

I've had this done too this past february. The procedure was totally painless. I had sedation and had only a tiny needlestick spot where they put the catheter into the vein. Had to stay in the hospital to get antibiotics for a few days afterwards. Well worth the piece of mind.
The bleeding episodes were way too scary! One of them was really bad and I was lucky to make it thru it.
