My son is 7 and has CF. I was diagnosed last night with severe bronchitis. The doctor told me if I am not better withhin 2 day I may have to go to the hospital. My main concern is how do I prevent my son from getting this? It all started with my sister. We all decided to go away as a family and she showed up with this. When we got upstate we had to find her a doctor right away. While I am extremely upset with her for doing this my main concern now is my son. What do I look for? How do I prevent this?? I am so lost!

I got bronchitis a few years ago and was concerned with DS getting it as well. I pretty much quarantined myself in another room, wore a mask and washed my hands quite a bit. The doctor claimed I wasn't contagious, but I wasn't going to take any chances. I was on ABX and codeine cough syrup and was fine after a few days. A couple times I DID have DH whack me on the back (CPT) a few times to get things moving.

I guess I'd try to avoid your son if possible and if he develops any similar symptoms or is just a little off, take him to the clinic. You could also call his cf clinic to see what they say. Are you SURE it's bronchitis and not the flu?

Oh, and when I was recovering and taking a power (coma-like) nap. I woke up to find DS sitting on my head. DH wasn't watching him very well. I was worried to death he was going to get it and fortunately he didn't.

Ugh, this is so stressful. I recently had a VERY bad cough/cold...still have residual occasional cough from this cold from 2 weeks ago. I so worried that Maggie would get it; and she did but not even nearly as bad as I did. Not sure why; could have been the VEST and nebs she does everyday plus the anti's she on. Good handwashing is key; cough into your arm Purell after using tissues. I try not to touch my face when I am sick; spreads germ. Your priority is to take care of yourself...Drink fluids; rest (if possible), see if someone else can help with your child. When I am sick (which is not often), I make Maggie get her own enzymes(so I don't have to touch them). Also, whatever meds she can handle herself I let her do. When i was coughing, I drank tea with honey, lots of robitussin, cough drops. Hot showers helped. It sucks to be sick when you are the main caregiver. My husband had pneumonia a couple years ago and he wore a mask in the house til he had been on antibiotics for a few days. He was pretty sick too, he even used Maggie's albuterol neb and I did CPT on him. Try not to sress too much as we only have control over so many things and in my post I sound like a control freak(whcih of course I am). Feel better soon!

Bronchitis itself is not contagious, but the bug that caused you to get it could be. Chances are he's already been exposed. You probably should increase vest or airway clearance and be on the lookout -- but stressing yourself out over whether he will get this is not going to make a difference. Just because the illness turned to bronchitis in you, doesn't not mean it will in him. My 8 year old was diagnosed with bronchitis today and my daughter did not get it. He's been coughing from a cold a few weeks ago and it has turned into bronchitis.

One thing I've found....I used to get bronchitis a lot. Pretty much every cold turned into bronchitis for me. I found that once I treated my asthma with regular bronchiodialators while sick, I stopped getting bronchitis. So keep up with airway clearance and his nebs and hopefully he won't get this.
