Bugs in sinuses

Yes, C/F bugs can take up residence in your sinus (oh joy) I used to have constant headaches .. Do you do nasal irrigations? This helps me tremendously.. Does this dr. do nasal cultures? If so what are you growing? If not , then i find something wrong right there.. I know you have to be on a specific abx for weeks to kill a sinus bug. How are your teeth? Your eyes?.. I wouldn't jump into sinus surgery unless absolutely necessary .. If this dr. is not figuring out the problem, then maybe it's time to move onto someone who will...Let us know what happens.. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> joni

Like I said it kinda feels like a constant sinus infection that never goes away.. but here are the things go against it being a sinus infection:

- sudafed does nothing (And it had in the past)
- my sinuses don't feel blocked most of the time
- sinus CT was clear, endoscopy was clear (the pain was present when these were done)
- there's a strange "blocked" sensation behind my eyes that seems associated with my eyes inability to produce tears and the pain
- usually sinus infection make you tear more

But I've been EXTREMELY abnormally dehydrated the entire time..so maybe there's not enough fluid to congest my sinuses, but this allows the bugs to attack my sinuses with no defense? I've been having extremely wierd dry skin issues..there's a constant gummy, extremely dry feeling in my throat, my eyes cannot produce automatic tears. It's really wierd. A few months ago I started having this constant rumbling noise in my head that I know is associated with the pain/inflammation feeling in my head. It's like the noise you hear when you are really sick. The pain has started waking me up at night. I know this is headed somwhere really bad. It appears I have CF.. which is rare.. but it's affecting me in a way that no one seems to be familiar with, which makes it even more rare. Very difficult situation.

Yes bacteria can grow in your sinuses as well as your lungs. I actually had clear cultures from my lungs (bronchoscopes) post transplant then had a flare up of a sinus infection (though mild it was enough) I had a few fevers and when they did my next bronch I had a culture come back showing Psuedo. I started nasal irrigations, did my vest for a few days along with some meds for my sinuses for a few weeks. Since then my cultures have come back clear.

I have been doing sinuses rinses twice a day since that time and have continued to have clear cultures from my lungs.

Also something to think about as I know I have had this problem since I had my transplant. I was having really bad headaches that resembled sinus pressure all around and behind my eyes. They sent me to an ENT because they didn't think I was having the sinus issues as they had already treated that. When I went to the ENT he sent me for a CT scan. Though it did come back abnormal (unlike yours) the ENT checked out my sinuses and said that there wasn't anything in there really that my sinus tissue was just extremely inflammed. He said there was a small amount of "junk" but otherwise it was mainly the inflammation that he thought may be causing the headaches. As I have continued with the sinus rinses and treated my allergies properly the headaches have gone away.

Also to add at my last ENT appt the doc said that my sinuses looked great. So I think that the combination of things helped. So I guess this post kind of hit on alot of things, but my main point is this ... even if you don't have a sinus infection with a ton of crap in your nose your sinus tissue could still be inflammed and maybe that is what is causing you problems.

Take Care,
Lindsey

I've had 2 "clean outs" of my sinuses via surgery. They were 10 years apart. Basically what they did was went in and scraped out all the junk that had accumulated in there are caused infections and blockages. I was AMAZED at how great I felt afterward. Up until the first one (when I was 15) I had no idea that I could breathe all the way in through my nose! The sensation tickled but was a wonderful change.

I am colonized by aspergillus in my sinuses. It also turns out I'm allergic to it (a condition called Allergic Broncho-Pulmonary Aspergilliosis "ABPA" The first time I suspected it was when I blew my nose and out came blue fuzz! I brought it to my doc and they confirmed that I was culturing that mold. It's very pervasive and I was too far into being colonized for them to get rid of it, so now I'm always on antifungals just to keep my allergic reaction to it to a minimum.
