Camping

Thank you for bringing up this topic, and for the answers! I have been trying to talk my husband into going camping or something (he never did it as a kid) but I've been concerned about all the CF stuff. When I was a kid and we went camping my parents were the ones to figure out how to make it work. And if I got too sick, we'd just come home! (Mostly we camped at the beach).

This is such an encouraging post. This opens up a whole new realm of activities for us to share. With our wedding anniversary coming up in just 10 days, maybe I'll see if we can celebrate by buying a tent! Yay!

can't you get a site with electricity?? I once went camping while on IV's and rather than bringing the whole IV pole and pump, I hung my cipro from a tree branch!! My doc keeps a picture of it in my chart! Good luck and have fun!

We have went camping multiple times and I woudl do the portable or go visit our 'high rent friends' i.e. a camper and use their electricity. I would close my car doors and do the flutter or acapella, so the whole campground doesnt hear you coughing , or alot of times DH woudl say we woudl do the mcd's run in the am so I could do it on the drive there and back.

Additionally, just to mention that our tent gets musty having been stored all season and so my DH worries very much about it affecting me, especially wiht ABPA. So one thing we have come up with is to pop it up and air it out ahead of time, wipe the floor with bleach, and spray it inside with lysol all ahead of time.

I woudl also think that if you bought a new tent you woudl ideally want to air it out ahead of time as the plasticy fumes can get to you (at least me).

Absolutely! Jeremy is usually a 2 Vest a day guy, with albuterol, atrovent, mucomyst and hypertonic saline for nebs.

Here's what we do:

Backpacking - yes, I just said backpacking. As in carrying a 40 lb pack with all your stuff. We have a Pari Trek with 2 battery packs and an acapella. After a day of backpacking (~5 miles), he usually doesn't need any therapy - the bouncing of the pack is excellent airway clearance. If it's a short trip (~1 mile), he'll do an evening one, but it's not all that productive. In the am, I cook breakfast while he does nebs and an acapella. We love backpacking, and have plans to do it every Friday this summer. We have a local state park with backpacking sites about a mile in, so it's just fun. We're getting into shape for our anniversary trip - three nights backpacking on Isle Royale. We did two nights for our honeymoon and LOVED IT!

Regular camping with no access to an electrical site - We have two XPower 300 power packs (you can get them at Menards or Home Depot, I think). One will runs the VEST, and can be recharged in the car while you drive. I think we can get two 30 hour VEST therapies out of it. We use that in combination with the Trek. Sometimes it requires we drive around while he does his therapies (so the trek plugs into the car), but that's not a big deal. (Twilight = good time to look for wildlife)

Camping with Electrical Access - just plug stuff in! Even if you aren't in a camper - you can use the electrical. Just be sure to bring an adapter in case there isn't a standard wall plug.
