Can a CF carrier be affected physically/medically by the gene?

My husband is a carrier (not sure which mutation). His sister has CF (I don't know her mutations, either). We have a 4 year old son, but he hasn't had a carrier test done. I don't have any mutations, and he doesn't have CF.

I'm just wondering if people with one mutation are affected at all physcially or medically. I've always said that when my husband gets sick, he's down and out for weeks at a time, and we've always joked that it's because he has a "little bit" of CF in him. It could also be from the fact that he's a truck driver who doesn't take vitamins, drink water, or sleep enough. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> As a kid, he had ear infection after ear infection and was supposed to have tubes, but his parents couldn't afford it. I know some people are just more prone to EI's, but I've always wondered if maybe he's somehow affected by that gene mutation.

Is there any research on this? Or, is it not even possible?

There is not a whole lot of research on this. Depends on who you ask, some think that those who are carriers of certain mutations and have sinus issues or asthma may have some correlation. It is also my understanding that there is a high number of carriers that end up having gall bladder issues, but I don't know if there is any real proof. I did have my gall bladder removed at age 22 after giving birth to my first son, which is young, but there is also a correlation between gall bladder attacks and giving birth, usually multiple but not unusual after just one. So not sure if it was the gene I carry or the pregnacy that brought it on.

Usually the symptoms are very mild and hard to prove that its the mutation causing any of the issues. Interesting though. Too bad there isn't more research, though, I would rather the time be spent trying to cure CF than what effects there are for carriers, especially since they are minimal and do not usually affect life or life exepctancy, at least that I am aware of.

Oh yes many carriers have symptoms.

My mom and her sisters can't digest fatty food well at all. And my dad's side of the family has horrible sinus and asthma issues.

Oh my goodness...I didn't even think of that...my husband has terrible digestive issues...frequent bowel movements, very gassy, a lot of digestive pain. Again, I've just always blamed it on the fact that he's a man and a truck driver.
