Career Decisions

I think the difficult thing about choosing a field like teaching is that it is difficult for you to see the big picture. There is NO question that all of us can do a job like that for a time; but, what is hard are the times when you can't. When you lose some precious lung function and you really want to protect what you have.....that is when continuing a job like that becomes difficult and then turns into a big "life decision" change. It is hard enough to deal with health problems; but, then to have to deal with a career that is not a good fit....that makes everything more emotionally difficult.

I picked speech therapy for me which is schools and medical. Not a good pick for me and when I started having health problems....just when I needed more money to pay medical bills.....I ABSOLUTELY HAD to lay my career down. I would have NEVER have thought that would happen to me and I would have NEVER given this advice 20 years ago.

If you like kids or you like the structure of the academic system, I would look at options that fit what entices you about that field and then look "out of the box" for options that will help you protect your lung function. I am now looking into providing "telepractice" speech therapy. It is an awesome option for me.....I do believe there are always options that will allow you to do what you want to do. As CFers we just have to be a little more creative and I think we are well-equipped for that<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I am a teacher and am on my third year. There is nothing else I could do. I love it. I would rather teach for less years and then stop working than do a desk job for longer. But that is because I am very passionate about my job. If you love teaching I say do it. The world needs more good teachers. My lung function has not been affected so far and i teach 5th grade.

It is important, however, that you find a supportive school. I don't know if I could do it if my boss wasn't as understanding of my situation.

The way I see it, is that we don't have a lot of time here anyway. Might as well do something you love for the time you have.
