There is a difference between the Trio and Altera metal heads. But there is no difference between the plastic pieces. I am only referring to interchanging the plastic pieces with my Tobramycin and Cayston.

I think I originally saw the idea on here, what we do is use three each cycle..one for each treatment, then just have to sterilize them all at night. I think the easiest way to explain..on Piper's second cycle, is when we had the 3 handsets. I numbered her original 1., one extra 2., and one extra 3. She'll start her third cycle next month, when that set comes, I'll throw away handset 1., and label the new one 4. I hope that makes sense...I just really love only dealing with the sterilization once a day!</end quote>

That's a really good idea.

I guess I consider the head to be a part of the handset since they come together. Maybe I am the only one that thinks this way.

I do something similar to what Amanda does, but after acquiring the third, I use 3 per day until I have 3 new ones, then dispose of all three at once. Everything but the metal head and blue insert can be recycled. Or you can use the plastic parts to have 2 days worth of meds and just throw out the old metal heads. My doctor did tell me NOT to use the metal heads more than 2-3 months because by the end of that period you're not getting the prescribed dose of Cayston.

Also Rubyrose is right in that the metal heads should not be used interchangeably, but the plastic parts CAN.

Finished my 1st month of Cayston about 14 days ago. Not as bad from a time consumption stand point that I thought it would be.

As far as the old Altera Nebulizer, I am using it with Tobi.
I am using 1/2 of the vial of Tobi per neb. rx because of the efficiency of the Altera head. I am going by the article, Guidance on the Use of the eFlow Nebulizers (Altera and Trio Dated April 6, 2010).
This takes about5-6 min.to neb. I time each dose of Tobi, it has run about the same time for each dose. I believe the secret is to clean and wash it imed. and steam sterlize it as least once a day to keep the tiny holes open.

By using the Tobi with the Altera, it could save me a lot of time around 137 hrs. per yr. if it continues as is.

As far as the Cayston, my jury is still out but it seems to me I am not as winded since I started the Cayston. Prior to Cayston, my sats droped to 86-87 (post Cayston consistently at 90)when on the treadmill, 15.5min. mile grade of 4.5 for 2 miles (no O2), I always check sat at the end. Also heart rate while on the treadmill is about 125, prior to Cayston it would run up to 135-140. My Fev1 is 28-29.

Good luck to all with the new drug Cayston, hope it helps us!!
