Alcohol is my weakness. But i dont indulge as often as I think I would if i didnt have CF. Sometimes i think i would drink soo much more if i didnt have CF, but then i think, i would be a different person so maybe i wouldnt. However, drinking makes me cough the next day, i do not know why but basically it is like i produce a lot more 'stuff' and cough more. No one ever tells you not to drink (other than that its not generally good for anyone) the way that they of course tell us not to smoke, for obvious reasons. I feel worse when i drink beer, i think this is because of what it is made of...wheat, or whatever, and i feel the same way if i eat a lot of carbohydrates (always have even before this no-carb craze). I think i have a mild wheat allergy which is actually fairly common. Anyway, my drink of choice is vodka b/c i like it and one drinks a lot less of it volume-wise so i notice i tend to cough less. however, because of vodka and a wedding last night (not mine) i have the worst hangover ever today. one doctor told me that drinking was ok but not to get to the point where you throw up because you can 'aspirate' it which could lead to infection. apparently everyone aspirates a little when they throw up it is hard not to. i cant smoke, drinking is the one thing i can kind of do, so i do sometimes, i mean come on i am 21, but i know it would be better if i didnt.

Careful not to drink too much. It's important to have a healthy liver and kidney, especially if a transplant is in your future. I love to have an occasional drink, but I always drink it with plenty of water. Alcohol dehydrates the body which is not good for secretions. Just a thought.

Just addindg more to the last post. Alcohol dehydrates the body which in turn will make your mucous thicker and harder to clear. When I go out for a night of drinking the next morning cough is pretty rough, not because I have more mucous but because it is harder to get out. Drinks lots of water the next day it should help.

Not to mention every time anyone(not just CFers) drink alcohol, we pull a lot of important antioxidants from our body. Namely Glutathione, which has been proven to be necessary for CFers health. Also alcohol will make your immune system less effective, not real good for CFers.

My 2 cents here...if you have diabetes, drinking should be a no-no, CF or not<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

why would it be bad in diabetes? the only time its bad is if you are on insulin and you drink straight spirits. you are suppose to drink pre mixed sugary drinks as alcohol lowers blood sugar.

Alcohol does not lower the blood sugar...its full of carbohydrates...so it actually increases blood sugar....

i dont know this from experience i have cf and so does my brother. i never got into alcohol just isnt my taste but my brother is a recovering alcoholic. he says after all he went thru with drinking and getting sober he wishes he never did it in the 1st place. i think if you feel like you might have a problem you should talk to someone. he has kidney and liver problems now and his lung function went way down after everything and now he is about to be evaluated for a lung transplant. it may seem like it makes you feel better but in the end its only gonna hurt you so i would definitely talk to someone about it. i hope this helps

To aspirate is to inhale something that shouldn't be inhaled. When you aspriate while throwing up, you inhale your vomit into your lungs (lovely thought LOL)

A word of warning to all Cf drinkers.

Alcohol which depletes the body of essential vitamins and minerals which are crucial for Cfers. It depletes the most important antioxidant Glutathione.

People with Cf only have a fraction of the amount of glutathione that a healthy person has and some new investigational therapies for CF are based on increasing the glutathione levels (see valerie hudson's reasearch).

Hope this helps when deciding to drink or not.
