I had allergy testing. They first tested me for a bunch of stuff, then retested in greater detail the ones I showed a reaction to the first time.
As for type of dog, they can't test for that, just dogs in general.
I've heard it said that poodles are best for people with allergies, but I reacted more to a poodle than another dog.
One thing to remember is that we aren't allergic to the pet's dander in and of itself. We are allergic to their saliva! And their dander contains their saliva, from cleaning themselves. But when that saliva filled dander is lying around, the greater the exposure.
Personally, I have allergies to everything, but that doesn't stop me. I don't know what I'd do or be without my furry kids. We have 1 dog and 4 cats. We got rid of our carpet to make it easier to clean and stay clean of fur.
The allergies can make your lung issues worse - the histamine mucus can drip into your lungs, which can become infected at worst, or simply cause a bunch of inflammation at best (given you are allergic). But no one can argue the benefits of pet ownership. So, it's a matter of personal choice and what you are willing to put up with.
