Hell no, don't get rid of the dog. Especially if they love the dog. I've grown up around goldens. During my life, I've had... at least 7 (and that does not include 3 litters we had in the house). I also have cats, birds, fish, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters, and a ferret.

Pets are not hurting him unless he has an additional unrelated allergy to dogs.

I got a similar response from my MIL when we adopted a basset hound last spring. Made a comment about how our house was finally smelling clean again. After our elderly, diabetic, blind, incontinent hound died, our son begged us daily to bring him back. Having a dog makes him so happy. And I think having a pet not only contributes to our mental well being, but it motivates me to get off my butt and go for walks with my son and the dog, as well as keep the house clean. Because we have tile and hardwood floors, I tend to notice if the pet hair begins to waft and will make more of an effort to sweep and wetjet the floors.

We did ask the doctor after DS was born -- my MIL wanted to know if we should get rid of the dog -- and he said no.

I'm not sure what you mean by feeding is an issue? I can understand the cleanliness, but that affects all people, not just CFers.

I don't think he needs to get rid of the dog. He should talk to the DR if he is concerned and if the DR says no then I would think you should be ok with it. Unless he has allergies to dogs, and severe ones, I see no reason to push so hard.

I've had dogs all my life (spaniels, labs, toy poodle, shepards) and I have never had any issues.

i couldnt imagine not having my animals around(two dogs, two guinea pigs, two ferrets and a snake). and they are a lot of work, but it pays off in the end. they are my company since i am home alone a lot with my husband and i working separate shifts. i think as long as the doctor and your son dont have a problem with the dog then he should stay.
