CF and Phoenix

There is a chance in a year Kevin's job could be transferring us to Phoenix AZ. Before we decide to go I wanted to know what the clinic's there are like and how hard Phoenix is on your lungs. I have never been there. I really hope we don't go because I love where we live (we are just moving into a new house) and the doctors and nurses know AJ so well. It really scares me to go somewhere else. When we lived in Idaho his DR. up there did things a lot different than here and the hospitals where very different. Any info on any aspect of Phoenix and CF would be appreciated.

Well, we have been going to the Phoenix Children's Hospital CF clinic since Ethan Sky was 10 months and he is now 4 years old. Please remember that i am just one person as i am sure others have very different opinions.
My overall thoughts on the CF clinic are that they have one plan for all CF patients and are very resistant to challenging their treatment plan. They know us now though, and know that we will do our own research and do what we feel is best and not just what they do for every CF patient that comes through.
The nutritionist is good mostly, she seems to always be in a hurry but i am sure that that is the same for all medical care specialists. We are challenging her quite a bit though in refusing to do Nutren Jr. and making our own "healthy juice." As usual they pressure a lot about weight issues.
The altitude in Phoenix is fine, no challenges in that area. It is very dry here other than during the "monsoon" season in July-September. I have yet to be very good about using a humidifier as I get so scared about making sure it is really clean and also I haven't found a really good one at a decent price.
The acutal Phoenix area is horrible with polution and there are notices during the pre-monsoon summer months about bad air quality and to keep persons with health issues inside. Outside the phoenix area, the pollution does not seem as bad.
I can't really take the kids out during the day in the summer time as you start sweating the minute you step outside. We add salt into everything and give water like crazy.
Hope that helps. Please let me know if you want any other info.

Thank you for all of that info. Are the doctors at your clinic very open to trying new things? My son is very ill and we need to be seeing soomeone who is willing change his plan as his illness progresses and is willing to push the envelope (carefully) as his current doctors seem willing to do.

I am very new to this. My daughter was diagnosed 4 months ago and we go to Phoenix Childrens. Avery has had a very hard time gaining weight so we have been seen every two weeks for weight checks. I have really enjoyed working with the Pulmo team. They are very much on top of things and I get phone calls back in record time.

If you have GI issues (like we do) then you might want to sit down with a GI and interview them before you determine if it is a right fit. We are changing to out of Childrens for our GI issues. I never get a phone call back on anything and the attention to detail is horrible. The nurse practioner (we had to see her b/c our dr was unavailable) was awful! She smelled of smoke and didn't wash her hands before touching my daughter - a big NO NO in my book! I am sure others have had different experiences as well and might really like them - we just don't.

The heat in PHX sucks! My daughter sweats a lot so we stay in during the day. During the cooler months it is gorgeous and there is a ton to do. You are driving distance from pine forests, the Grand Canyon, and a beautiful state parks.

I hope this helps. PM me if you have any other questions!
