CF and the monthly cycle- again, for the ladies...

My allergies go nuts when it's that time of the month. My FEV1 drops, I get a whistling asthmatic cough, and I have more trouble with hemoptysis. I don't gain water weight with my period, which is weird I guess. My weight is usually down at that time.

Another interesting tidbit (sorry if this is TMI) is that my BMs are REALLY healthy looking when I've got my period.

My theory about the asthma flare-ups is that my body is working so incredibly hard just to have a "normal" period, that the rest of my body systems fall by the wayside. My mom also has wicked allergies like I do, so I don't think my PMS issues are isolated to CF stuff.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone else have trouble using tampons? I've found that they don't work well to absorb my flow because I've got so much mucus in there. It just slides down the outside of the tampon rather than soak into it. I feel so silly sometimes to be wearing a pad, but they're really all that works for me.

My FEV1 drops at that time of the month and my asthma flares up. I also have quite bad period pain.

So yes, I feel MUCH better missing mine. I just take regular birth control and skip the red section for about 6 months at a time. I figure that women can be almost constantly pregnant without many problems so this can't be too bad

Vivian is just 10 and has started her cycle thanks ladies for this topic, I will have to pay more attention to Vivian and try to record her problems before and after. That wil give me a better perspective and help me deal with her and maybe be more understanding.

Just thought i'd add for those who thought it was unnatural to not have a peroid. Our consistent monthly peroids are actually rather unnatural and a concequence of our modern life style. A peroid is actually a massive inflammatory insult to the ovary when the egg is released. (believe me i've worked on cow ovaries with eggs about to release - it's not a pretty site).
Anyway, centuries ago women wouldn't get peroids till they were probably about 18. Then they would maybe have one or two before getting pregnant. Continual and proper breastfeeding (i.e. no stops for bottles), would mean they wouldn't get get pregnant for a while. Then they would have a few more kids, maybe only having a few peroids between them and then they would die. (perhaps reaching menopause but mostly likey not.)
The reason for girls reaching menarche (first peroid), earlier could be argued for the fake oestrogens in our water etc. But either way, the fact that we now have peroids every month is inherrent of our INfertility i.e. us NOT being pregnant.
think about it. I think our body would much rather not go through all that every month. A peroid is quite a traumatic event in terms of biological reponses.
FYI any peroid you get on the pill or any other form of hormonal contracpetion is generally fake as an egg is not released. If it's fake, why not just skip it.
Of course the only advantage of having natural peroids (i.e. actually releasing an egg), is protection from oestoporosis.

I think i'm right about this but i haven't looked anything up (just what i remember from my degree)
xxxx
ps in answer to your question i'm not much help as i hardly get any peroids naturally. However if and when i do get one i usually get the runs the day before and during it. nice. I'm a healthy weight so my unperoidness isn't a weight issue, but i was underweight for a very long time so maybe my body is still readjusting.

I am more congested & SOB right before/during my cycle.
I always try to schedule my 3 month CF appts for some other time of month so I don't feel so crappy when I do my PFTs.

I wonder if studies have actually been done that state that lung function is lower during this time of month?

OMG I am so glad you mentioned this. I have never had much luck with tampons, but made it work somehow while in high school. Once I left high school I minimized the use to like times when I went swimming etc. Once I had Jazmine I couldnt use them at all. They have always been uncomfortable, never absorbed properly (lots of leaks) and was just a hassle. I do have a tilted uterus and figured that was the problem in addition to the dryness that CF women encounter. SO now in addition to wearing Granny Panties I stick with pads. FUN!

oh, the tampon leaks. I remember them! could it be something to do with CF and mucus? I did notice mucus on the tampons, but that was a (long) while ago.
