Nov. 9th, though i'm going home overnight to vote (long story) so if i can get in early enough and if they have an appt available, i might try to see my doc there. either way, i'm "looking forward" to it.

hope all is well

I've been at the adult clinic in Chapel Hill, NC (UNC Hospitals) since I was 19. I kind of like it better than pedes b/c they actually tell me everything that's going on and let me play a large part in deciding what treatments I get. I do miss staying on the children's floor when I'm in the hospital for IV's, though, they were much nicer!! Does anyone else go to clinic at UNC?

That's weird. I've had trouble with doctors before who talked over and treated me like I was 5, when I knew better about my CF than they did... I always changed doctors when I met ones like that. I outright refuse to deal with doctors like that. Knowing my temper I'd end up lashing out at a doctor like that if I was forced to see them. I've been with my current pulmonologist since around age 10. And she knows me so well that generally she trusts me, listens to me, and takes into consideration what I can and can't or will and won't do. The nurse I speak to on the floor also knows me the same. If I call Tina to tell her I'm not feeling well, usually she will call in a prescription without even seeing me, because she knows I know when I'm sick. So even though pedes docs tend to talk down to you, if they know you well enough, usually they come around. Dr. Egan learned very fast what type of person I am, and that if I can't currently do a treatment (over the summer I had to wait to go in for IV meds about 2 weeks, because of a 5-week-long job I had), she won't be able to change my mind. So she respects that, gives me her opinions, and then listens to what I say. I guess it really depends mostly on each individual doc.

i really loved my pediatric doc, she was my doctor for about 16 years, but i think since my mom was always with me she would talk more to her (and she was probably just used to doing that from when i was little), and she would listen more to what my mom said about how i was feeling than to what i said. my adult doctor explains everything to ME, even when my mom comes with me. she even makes a point of showing me all of my x-rays and telling me what she sees in each one, which i like. i definitely had to earn her trust before she would just take my word that i was feeling ok even if my numbers were down, or feeling badly even though my numbers were ok, but now that she knows that i am usually right, she really takes my word for it. i like that she really treats me based on how i feel, and not solely on what my pft's say, b/c sometimes i swear they are just wrong!!! but i agree with you, i think it just varies from doc to doc, and it's also based on how much they trust your opinion!

i find it weird hearing you all talk about "changing doctors and clinics" where i am, in australia, there's one adult and one childrens clinic and thats that. no changing no matter what you think. bit of a shame really.

Jenny, How are things at Chapel Hill? My daughers were diagnosed back in 1990 when we were stationed in Goldsboro, NC. They went to Duke for clinic. Though they only went like about 4 times before we moved. My oldest now 17 and a senior in HS is looking at UNCW for college. In fact my husband and her are heading out there over Veteran's Day weekend to visit the campus. They fly into Raleigh so she will get an idea of how far she will have to drive to go to clinic. The down side to her going to UNCW is that drive to clinic. We never realized that there was more than one CF clinc in the Raleigh area. Or am I being really stupid and Chapel Hill is at Duke? Please correct me. Anyhow, I was just wondering how it was there. She's always gone to Peds. clinic, Peds. ward when in the hospital etc. She was moved to the adult ward one time for part of her stay and she hated it there. She said there were too many "old" people and the nurses didn't answer half the time and it seemed like child life wouldn't get her messages when she asked the nurses to call. She finally would tell them she was going to look for child life or was heading upstairs. She was 15 then. We currently live in Nebraska. Military if you haven't guessed it already.

My daughter goes to UNC and we love it. She's only 3 so we definitely go to the children's clinic. She was diagnosed at Duke and we went for one other visit there and absolutely hated it. We quickly switched to UNC and are very pleased that we did. Good luck to your daughter going to UNCW.........I went to ECU in Greenville.

I meant to add that Duke is located in Durham and UNC is in Chapel Hill. They are two very different CF clinics.
