CF Culture Results

Hi there! I'm taking microbiology this semester (I also have a daughter w/CF). In our lab at school, after inoculation, incubation periods are ALWAYS 24-48 hours, and depending on other tests to determine the bacteria's genus/species, it can take up to 72 hours. K. pneuminiae takes 72 hours to come up positive when conducting a Urease test. If the lab is only going by gram's, it will take at least a 24 hr incubation, but with that, there's no genus or species. Gram staining tells you what gram and if it's rod (bacillus) or coccus and that's ALL. Other tests have to be conducted after gram-staining to determine what the bug, if any, is.
<br />The lab messed up on the culture.

As Ymikhale said, it takes 2 weeks for final results because it takes that long for a fungus (mold) to grow enough for them to tell the species. You should be able to get preliminary bacterial results much quicker (~2 days) with a more complete reading with resistance info after about a week. A viral nasal swab takes 24 hours for the quick test and 48 for the more extensive test.

You are right to pursue this, Liza. We are told to call back at least five days after cultures...but even then we are told that something may still be growing out...ie. mold hasn't yet been identified as aspergillus, a postive AFB smear hasn't grown out abcessus yet, and so on. Could this be a nurse issue? Does your doctor know results are being sent so soon? I would definitely express your concerns. Everything may be just fine with your little guy right now, but there is a good chance that in the future he may grow something that needs a little more time to brew in the lab.

just wanted to add that wbc is a very impotant pointer. my dd always (almost) cultures something and very often our doctor decides on whether to treat based on wbc count (that indicates infection if high)

Lisa:

In your post you talk about the "CF CENTER" doctor and the "LOCAL CF" doctor. Can you enlighten me on the difference?

Preliminary results are usually in in 72 hours. If something shows up, depending on what it is it can take a while to grow out, it took over six weeks for my MAC to culture out totally.. and less then that for the Mycobacteria Fortuium to grow, It took four months for the sensitivities to come back.. Insane.

I am learning more and more the difference between centers and believe me there is a difference.
